Being new to Tennessee, I was wondering when the bucks start to drop their anterlers?

now.found 1 in food plot last week.have also seen a few bucks with antlers still attached during turkey season.

A buddy told me that he has seen a couple one-antlered bucks. A guy at his club killed a huge "doe" that turned out to be a buck that had already shed its antlers.

Anytime from now through March. I have bucks in my yard that carry until the end of April, however.

Had a friend kill what he thought was a doe last weekend of rifle, ended up being a buck who'd already shed.

What setterman said!! In Wayne and Lawrence i have personally witnessed this for years. We dont start finding antlers in our some 30+ food plots until early to mid march and thru april 1st.
I have almost without fail seen bucks carrying antlers each year since 2001 doing this

Outside of the far North, where early antler drop timing is highly genetic (helpful to not be carrying the extra weight of antlers through deep snow), antler drop timing is closely linked to individual buck's health and stress levels. Bucks that are in excellent health and have not been highly rut-stressed will carry their antlers until growth of the new set pops the old set off from underneath. This means bucks will carry their antlers until late March or early April. We have been able to use antler drop timing of local herds as a very accurate indicator of over-all herd condition. Lots of early dropping (in January) indicates a nutritionally stressed herd.
However, even realtively healthy bucks that were heavy participants in rutting activity often lose their antlers early, due to the stress of being active breeders. Even in a healthy deer herd--where most of the bucks are carrying their antlers until spring--the most active breeders may lose their antlers early (now).

A buddy of mine shot one then that knocked off one side when it hit the ground. I've heard lots of storys about folks popin em when they are draggin one out in the late season...

There ya go, I'd say thats a pretty good time line...Lots of people feel that the major factor in when any particular buck is most likely to (naturaly) drop its horns is related to its overall physical condition. As a general rule, bucks in lower stress environments should tend to carry longer than those that aren't....
...but we all know what they say about the rules!...

Same thing happened to me. I thought it was a young doe and it ended up being a young buck that had already dropped. On the flip side I was turkey hunting last April and saw two decent bucks running together with antlers still.

got 7 bucks in my field yesterday , one has only 1 side, all appear to be 1-2 yr olds.
But in S IL and E Ky most all have dropped.
But, I have picked up shed in TN the first week of jan!! Unless stressed or injured or bad shape, they tend to shed about the same time each year

a friend of mine was squirrel hunting yesterday in haywood county found a shed antler with blood still on the base.
