My brother killed an old doe in early season and according to him, she had about 2" of fat on her. He told me we are going to have a bad winter b/c of all the fat she had put on.

we didn't have many acorns where I hunt and it seems like others said they were everywher so that might be why our deer did not put on the fat this year.

Only deer I cut up was the 8pt I killed and I don't think I ever seen with so much fat on it..I was cutting big chunks off of it.I mean chunk after chunk! I didn't cut the other 2 up,i had them processed so I don't know about them.

All of mine were early season and had plenty of fat. With this cold weather and food sources shrinking they are burning the fat quickly.

Extremely Fat. Like 1/2 inch of nothing but fat, and then the meat.

The fat deer guys were they early, mid, or late season ?? The 6 deer that I got were all early in the season M.L. and the 1st part of gun. They all had alot of fat. Most the farmers in this area planted corn this year. Good mast crop also.

I guess just from acorns...?

Every doe i killed was covered in fat. The 2 that killed after Christmas were ridiculous!!! Had to cut the fat down the backbone and then down the ribcage and peel it off. It came off in one bit 1?2 inch thick sheet. That is the only way we could get to the backstrips.

Deer deposit fat if their diet provides it. Fat deposition in fall is "manditory" in that they will deposit fat as a survival technique even at the expense of other needs. If numerous harvested deer have little to no body fat, that is a sign of nutritional stress.

My East TN doe had some fat, but my Ohio doe, she was the sister of Fat Albert! Like Sign Man said, "peeled it off in sheets." I should have hung it out for the birds.
