...apparently we'd been watching the wrong side of the cornfield. On a hunch yesterday, I picked a high spot back away from the field and watched deer pouring out of a brushy creekbottom into a natural dip that led to the opposite side of the cornfield.
I told my son this afternoon, "If you won't come, I'm going by myself."
When we got situated there were three does that were already in the dip and looking back. I told my boy to get ready and set up the sticks. Saw the buck and ranged him at 239 yards. My son said he wasn't sure if he could hit him (he's had a tough year, accuracy wise) and I told him "I can!" He got a little more motivated then, took a deep breath, and popped the safety. I said "Aim about 1/3rd down his body and KILL HIM!"
The boy dropped him where he stood and got the monkey off his back!

Congrats to the young man! Taking a good buck on the last day of season is a rare event. He'll always remember this one.

Thanks.
The gun is a Remington Model 760 that was manufactured in 1971. It's a 30-06. I've put a Zeiss 3-9x40 on it and replaced the wood...and I had the barrel trimmed a bit.
It's been all over the country and it spent 9 days in the backwater once. I got it before I ever had a drivers license.
I insisted that my son carry it. Like I said, he's had accuracy issues and that gun is trained!
I was at my wit's end to rebuild his confidence in himself.
All in all, a really good afternoon!
