Yesterday the last possible day for me to hit the woods. I hadn't been out since November. My ambition is never as high as it is during bow season because that's what I love most. I already had killed two, one with a bow and one with my MZ, but I had never killed a deer - ever - with a shotgun or rifle.
So, I headed out thinking, "if it's brown, it's down." One more in the freezer wasn't gonna hurt anyway. So, at 4:44 pm, I was still huntin and saw this young 'en walk out of a trail that I'd cut back in August. He was wide open, but moving quickly. I shot off hand and had a bad hit. He ran straight toward me and stopped. Dropped him in his tracks at 45 yards after ejecting the first shell. Normally wouldn't consider taking a smaller deer like this, but it was my very first with during gun season and first in January too. And it was the last day of the year for me.
2009-2010 was one of the best hunting years of my life. Killed three...could have killed 10. Hunted just 15 days this year and saw deer on 8. I hunted public land 90% of the time, and that's where all my deer came from. My buddy also took his first deer ever this year with a bow. And my dad, who drove 600 miles up from Florida, also got him one too. Talk about restored confidence in public land... Can't wait for bow season next year already.

Yup, he was a button-yearling. Not the best quality picture. Took it with my blackberry. I had to feel his head. Should yearlings be that small this time of year??

We've seen a lot of little ones out there this year.... one that was very, very, very small back in November (25 lbs max). Too many deer competing for food maybe.
