We all know how valuable a deer's nose is to it's survival, but what about their sense of hearing. With all the sounds in the woods, it amazes me how they can decipher so many different sounds.
Amazing animals....aren't they.

Their hearing really is not much better than a human's... the difference is the ability to move the ears to pinpoint sound in different directions simultaneously, definately an amazing feature of a great animal.

One of the greatest values in their hearing is their ability to discern what sounds are "normal" and which aren't. As a very young hunter I was watching a small buck at about 100 yards when I intentionally "snapped" a twig that was catching my jacket as I tried to slowly turn to watch the deer. The sound of that tiny twig breaking was enough for the buck to turn and zero in on me from 100 yards away. It didn't seem loud, or unusual, to me, but it apparently was enough to tip him off.

I am always amazed at how the guys on the hunting shows will talk and whisper with big bucks right below them. I can't imagine a deer not hearing that.
They don't seem to have any trouble hearing the very faint "Swoosh" of my arms raising the bow or gun

Deer can hear better than I can, many many times they alert me to something coming way before I hear it, course my hearing isnt the best anyway!
