Well it has been a fairly screwy year with way more downs than ups. \:\( As this season has progressed I have been locked out of all my usual places and need some new places to hunt. I have don a bunch of "internet" scouting and haven't found much info on BCB. So would it be worth the trip from Knoxville to Bark Camp Barrens for the youth hunt or am I just as well to find a wma closer to home. Not looking for any hot spots just wondering if it is worth the 3 hour drive to scout next weekend and then again the youth weekend. I wanted to hunt it this weekend but couldn't get out of my reserve weekend duty.

Also, any place in the area to park a 29 foot camper for the weekend?

Thanks for the info.

This late in the season and with no scouting, I would suggest you stick closer to home. I hunted AEDC during the Dec 12-13th shotgun hunt. I logged 4 miles on my GPS and did find some sign but not what I had hoped for. Bark Camp Barrens is in the same general area as AEDC and shares the same topographical layout.

Don't waste your time. That place is so grown up and thick. Not sure how anyone can hunt it. You can't see 50FT in that place. Maybe Normandy, Natchez Trace.

I grew up hunting bark camp barrens. I hunted there several years before the state bought it. At one time there was a pile of deer there and probably still is but I haven't hunted it in about 6 years. As Asaltwpn1 said it is very thick in most places because it was logged when the state bought it. The second half of the gun season is usually closed but I don't know about the juvy hunt or if this is still the pratice for sure. Now would I drive 3 hours to hunt there..... NO ! I live 15 minutes from it and don't hunt there anymore.

I don't know about the Young Sportsman's hunts for the following but why not consider a WMA closer to home like:

Catoosa, 79,000 acres, Cumberland/Morgan counties. Rating: 8
Cordell Hull, 25,000 acres, Jackson/Smith counties. Rating: 7
Cove Creek, 2,450 acres, Campbell County. Rating: 7
Foothills, 11,000 acres, Blount County. Rating: 6
Forks of the River, 450 acres, Knox County. Rating: 3
Mount Roosevelt, 11,000 acres, Cumberland/Morgan county.Rating: 5
Royal Blue/Sundquist, 123,000 acres, Campbell/Scott. Rating: 6.5

These are the best rated and you can also go to the following TWRA website to get down loadable maps of all the nearby WMA's.

I was thinking BCB becasue it was in Unit L so I thought maybe there would be more deer there than most other palces and it had a lot of land. I have considered most of the others but the deer population isn't to great on most. I have hunted several myself (Foothills, Forks of the River, Catoosa)and they just don't hold a lot of deer. I am unsure how TWRA gets their ratings. If you ever hunted Foothills or Royal Blue they should be closer to a 1 of 2.

I thought about Natchez Trace becasue it is big and has camping. I am also considering a couple of others in the Nashville area so the wife can go shopping while I am hunting with the kids.

I've been to Natchez Trace and there are deer trails in some places that look like cattle trails. I've never hunted it. Ask and maybe someone on here will help you.

Two youth hunters. My son is 10 and my daughter is 8. Bear Hollow was on the list of places to check. BCB was first on the list because I figured could scout it one weekend and hunt the next because of its size 1000acres vs 9000. I think I might check it out, thanks for the tip.

There are a few old treads on Natchez and it does have some promise. I think I might save it until next fall. There are a few others closer I am going to look at first.

Thanks guys!
