Finally got an 8 pointer this morning. Aniversary present I guess. I have artritus really bad and can't walk very far so I've been sitting in my jeep watching a clearcut on our lease. He came through around 10:30 this morning. Have cell phone pics. If somebody wants to post them.
I'm glad you got him, but that's against the law.

I don't think so. You can't run one down and shoot it, but sitting in a vehicle I do believe is ok. Just the same as sitting on a 4-wheeler.

I don't have my H&T Guide with me, but that's not correct. If it's capable of being driven on the road legally, it's illegal to hunt from it.

I found this on TWRA's website.
Hunting Froma Stationary Vehicle On private property, hunting while in or on a vehicle that cannot be legally licensed to operate on public highways in Tennessee (ORV, ATV) is permitted providing that the vehicle is stationary (engine may be running). Hunting from any vehicle, stationary or otherwise, is prohibited from a public road, right-of-way or on public property, including WMAs.

No actually, I had a discussion with my county's GW about this very subject. I asked because of the cold temps we're having now. It's illegal to hunt from a vehicle capable of being driven on the road. Tractors, atv's, utv's, are all fine. Sorry, I don't make the rules, but everybody has to follow them. If I'm correct, you can't even kill a deer you spotted from your vehicle.

congrats. and the way I'm reading it he was perfectly legal. it says prohibited from public road or property says nothing about private property I would think if it included private property then it would say prohibited period or include it in the wording

No, ask that question in TWRA Questions and see what answer you get.

Yodel Dog you can get out of your vehicle and stalk a deer.
A guy I know very well got ticketed for doing this on his own property. He was cited because he spotted the deer from his vehicle.

Hey guys, I appreciate the support. Somebody it seems always has to pee in someone else's cereal. I wasn't in my jeep when I shot the deer, but I was on our own property anyway. I just hope yoder ain't on my property to harass me this weekend. I like the Barney Fife pic.
I've been sitting in my jeep watching a clearcut on our lease
It doesn't matter if you shot from your jeep or not. If you were hunting from your jeep, you broke the law. You wouldn't have near the support if you'd shot the deer over a pile of corn. The law is the law. I just spoke with someone at the regional office, and I am correct. You might want to familiarize yourself with the law before you go bragging about it on a public forum.

so....who cares....its cold...he cant get around....what if he got into a tree and something bad happend to him....as long as its cold and raining or something that makes you physically unable to get out whats the problem with that>>>> sitting in you truck with the heat on.....would be fine.....whats the diffrence if you was in a shooting house with a propane heater....its safer.......you can't get carbon monoxide doing that......
but congrats on your buck...you are no less of a hunter....
.....they should think about makeing changes of that law its stupid......if you are on private property it should be legal....to me its no diffrent than hunting out of a heated shooting house.....and it gives the deer and advantage....the engine is running>>>

And............
Ya know, I posted a thread in the fishing forum a couple of years ago. I apparently didn't word it very well. It was about a big bass I caught and released. I said something to the tune of... " Took 20 or more from a private lake".... It looked like me and a friend of mine took more bass than the limit allows. I got a pm from a VERY high ranking official with the TWRA asking me about it, and explained the regulations. After explaining the catch was bream, a few bass, crappie, and plenty of catfish, dude congratulated me on the day fishing. No harm, no foul. I worded my thread wrong. I left out that info.
Now, why did I even take the time to type all this????
Every post I got in the fishing forum was "congrats" and not some wannabe GW checking the regs.. There are a few here who pick at every thread until they find something that "seems" wrong. No offense Yodel, but you have been tagged "one of those" on this thread by your accusations..
Just Sayin.

That's fine with me. I had a GW walk over a mile to check me on private property. He tried every way in the world to find something wrong with me sitting on my UTV while I was waiting for it to stop pouring down rain. And I was perfectly legal. He didn't seem very happy to have walked that far for nothing. Now some guy wants to get on here and brag about the buck he killed while watching a clearcut in his jeep? What's good for the goose is good for the gander, my friend.

I'm not going to get into an argument on here. I have too much respect for Tndeer for that. I will say that ANYBODY can get on a keyboard and be a big man and the only BRAGGING I ever did about anything in my life was in private talking to my wife. I'm out and won't comment on this again.

TWRA.....care to comment on this matter. Seems to be a misinterpatation of the law reguarding, can you or cant you . Might save someone a fine someday.

Where did yodel dog go?? He must be at home studying the hunting regulations and measuring his orange vests to make sure they have 500 sq inches in them.

You need to give up the barney fife routine and congratulate the man on a great hunt.including WMAs.
I challenge anyone to ask this question in the TWRA Questions forum: Can I legally hunt from my vehicle on private property? Better yet, I'll ask it.

Congratulations, my grandfather is 74 and he still hunts from a heated Kawasaki mule, I personally see no difference between the mule and your jeep. So congratulations on a good hunt!

I have learned a lot from this thread. You guys would crucify someone if they got on here and talked about shooting a buck over corn, spotlighting, without tagging, etc., but a guy hunts from his jeep, kills a deer and it's perfectly fine. It seems you guys pick and choose what laws you think shouldn't be broken and those that should. On top of all that, some of you can't even interpret the law. I'm not TWRA, but I can interpret the law. I've asked this question in the TWRA Questions forum, so you all can judge for yourself if a law was broken. If I'm wrong, I will apologize to everyone.

Only if the vehicle can not be registered for operation on Tennessee roadways (i.e. ATVs, tractors, UTVs).
Looks like I was right, Hatchee. You cannot hunt from a vehicle (jeep). My work here is done.

For future reference yodel dog, pm the hunter rather than point out a (very) borderline violation in a public forum. With the brutal weather, time of year (end of season) and his physical limitations I do not think even the most anal retentive W0 gives a rats arse whether or not his jeep is registerable or not. There was a happy hunter on here a couple yrs ago that just killed his first bobcat and posted his hunt and pics. Unfortunately, he killed it in bow season and had no idea there was a season on the (nov 15 - feb 15. Rather than attack him in public forum, I pm'd him and he deleted the thread just a few minutes later. He didn't break the law on purpose and attacking him was not goin to bring the bobcat back.moral of the story- No one is perfect.

I'm actually glad he pointed it out because I (and apparently lots of others) had no idea it was the law. This law doesn't make sense when someone who is borderline disabled could get a ticket but I understand the rationale.
GW's can't cut much slack due to the amount of outlaws around our lease. You may not like the law but but Yodel Dog didn't write it.
I actually passed on a bobcat at 10 yards during bow season because of a thread I read on tndeer a few weeks before. I had no idea there was a bobcat season in TN and I probably would have showed him off or posted it here. Unfortunately, ignorance of the law isn't a defense.

PM or not maybe he was letting everyone know what the law was. Apparently most of you weren't aware of the law in the first place. So, I guess since the weather is so brutal we should just ride shoot deer from the road with a spot light. That way we won't get too cold! See more deer too I'm sure.
That's about as lame as what you just said. The law is the law.
And about yodle dog being a snitch...I think the only thing a reasonable person could tell about him from reading his post is that he has ethics!

I didn't say he did...if you'd read the quote above he was saying the GW basically wouldn't/shouldn't care if he broke the law since it so COLD. So, I thought it'd be a good idea since we, in some peoples opinion, can just decide what law to abide by and which one we can brake...since a GW wouldn't give a "rats arse"!

You have totally forgotten the part where he said he got out of the jeep before harvest
Did there used to be an exemption where handicapped people could still hunt from vehicles?
Congrats on a good buck Ken. Don't let some discourage a great kill.
BTW, GW's have a lot of room on some of the interpretations of the laws. How many times have you heard, that would be at the WO's discretion. That makes it hard for me to believe that anyone could take one sentence out of a post and start reporting people to the TWRA as a factual violation of the law.

Oh yeah Im serious. If you add turn signals, mirrors, and a few other items to your Rhinos, Mules, or whatever, they can be registered and have limited highway use.
Look out KENBOB, the YOTE PACK is after ya.

[quote=TeamMainStreet]BTW an ATV has a title so therefore can be registered, right? Whats the difference. He was on private property nowhere near a road. Oh yeah Im serious. If you add turn signals, mirrors, and a few other items to your Rhinos, Mules, or whatever, they can be registered and have limited highway use. Look out KENBOB, the YOTE PACK is after ya.
I'll pay for your tag if they'll sell you one. Once again what most of this thread is about is ignorance of the laws!

I'll let my brother know that you got his renewal for his Rhino when the tag expires on his the next time. I will agree that there is no excuse for ignorance but lets just say that maybe your Grandpa loved to hunt more than anything in the world but he couldnt get around real good because his old broken down body wouldnt let him and the only way he could do it was for you to drive him back to one of his honey hole fields and park and let him just hunt. I think its a jacked up law in my opinion. On private property away from the road, parked. No harm, no foul. But hey, I dont make the rules either. OH BTW KenBob I wasnt trying to call you old.

wow.............sorry I missed all the fun last night, I was watching re-runs of "AS THE WORLD TURNS"...HAHA.
After reading this thread, yes all of it, I have to side with Yodel. The simple reason is this. This is a public forum that is very much PRO TWRA. The first post made by Yodel about the possible violation was harmless and warned that there may be a violation, THEN, he got attacked. Some told him that he was wrong and that it WAS legal, so he proved himself right and still was ridiculed that he revealed a game violation on a sight that is PRO TWRA.
Now............if the hunter wants to approach the TWRA and get them to consider issuing "handi-capped" permits so he and others CAN hunt from their vehicle , then fine. But until then, we ALL need to stay within the boundaries of the law and respect the TWRA.
Many laws in this country are not fair, IMO. Just because we don't agree with them, does not make it alright to violate them.
All we, as citizens, can do is interpret the law as it is written up and report possible violators to the TWRA and let them sort it all out.
Funny how we pick and choose the game violations to complain about, isn't it? I bet if the hunter had been parked right near the property line and thusly near another hunter and was bothering him, then the other hunter would have been calling the WO pretty quickly. It's so easy for someone to complain about a violation when it affects them and their hunting but they say nothing when it does not concern them.
A violation is just that.
I, for one, appreciate Yodel pointing this out and clearing up the law because I thought that it was perfectly legal to hunt from a vehicle on private property as long as the vehicle was not running.........
So, let me get this straight. If I am riding down a private road , see a deer, stop the vehicle, get OUT OF THE VEHICLE and shoot the deer, then that is a violation...?
I did not know that.

Now let out that great big Howl!!!!! Ba hoooooooooooooooooo, i was right! Anyway, congrats on the nice deer.
I have learned a lot from this thread. I'm not TWRA, I'm wrong everyone. Only if the vehicle can not be registered for operation on Tennessee roadways (i.e. ATVs, tractors, UTVs). Looks like I was right, Hatchee. You cannot hunt from a vehicle (jeep). My work here is done.

My turn...this is all really senseless.
However, Yodel was right. But I believe a certain amount of decorum should have been followed. Anyone who posts in a public forum about one of their successes, even though an infraction occurred, is obviously ignorant of the law, but also possesses no intention of breaking the law. The best way to have handled this, as was mentioned before, would be in a quiet PM as a good neighbor and fellow hunting buddy. This goes for any infraction that is so often debated here like baiting, etc. Law is law and right is right, but punking someone out in the forum shows as much poor form as the infraction does.
If all you fellow hunters would show some grace to each other, police each other in a firm but fair manner, the anti-hunting Nazis and anyone else trying to take away our lifestyle wouldn’t stand a chance against us.
Just because you’re right, it doesn’t make you right.

Ok guys here it is. I said I wouldn't comment on this again, but I was wrong again. I have been in contact with a TWRA autority and the matter has been closed. I was not intenionally breaking the law thus posted it on here. I guess I'll have to change my hunting straegy in the future. I do however agree that the matter could have been resolved in a more tactful way. Thanks everyone for your concerns. I will not post the deer on here for obvious reasons.

Kenbob, I apologize for this going way too far. The only reason it did was because I was basically told I didn't know what I was talking about. The point was not to prove you did anything wrong (I don't even know it really happened), but rather to prove what the law says. I sincerely apologize and hope you forgive me. I will handle this manner differently next time. Bad judgment on my part.

Yodel, It's all good. Like I stated from the beginning I had no idea it was wrong to do that. Like I said in my update I have talked to TWRA and it's taken care of. I do appreciate the apology though.

Wow, I defintely learned something from this post... Had no idea...
I musta broken the law 500 times when I was a kid. My papaw used to take me hunting before I could drive, and back then if it was bitter cold, we just sat in the truck. Of course, back then, there were so few deer we never even saw one

Congrats Kenbob, there is one in every crowd, jealousy is an ugly thing and it shows up here pretty often! If we all wanted too we could find something most everybody has done wrong sometime in the past, dont worry bout it! Like I said, its just jealousy that gets responses from failures.

Ok...I'm confused. It doesn't take much, but I am. lol
I thought TN passed a law where it was legal to have a loaded firearm such as a shotgun or rifle in a vehicle? They did ...didn't they? Or was that for a concealed carry permit holder only? Just askin

If you have a cc permit you may have a loaded long gun as long as the chamber is empty, magazine only can be loaded. You can now also hunt from a stationary motorized vehicle on private property as long as its not licensed for the road. Some yahoo here is jealous because this guy has some physical limitations and was hunting from his Jeep on private property and the got out and killed a buck! He will soon get over it though, im sure he's used to it by now!

Thanks Winchester. I wasn't sure, but remembered something about that passing earlier in the year. So if the guy in the jeep has a permit and was waiting without a round chambered his was legal?

Im not sure if he was legal to hunt since the jeep was licensed for the road, but if he has a cc permit and the gun didnt have one in the chamber, he was legal with the loaded gun. This guy has physical problems and actually got out of the jeep to kill the deer, which should make him perfectly legal. We just have some that seem to be jealous of him being succesful, even with his problems.
