with mature bucks, I'll say those 4.5+ but also 3.5+
I'm thinking back over the last few years on our place. We've took 5 bucks aged 4.5 or older. None were "aged" over 5.5. All 5 were killed in a core area of probably 100 acres that we got pics of them for one or two years. Very rarely did we get them outside that 100 acres.
My 7pt from this season, never ventured outside a 50 acre area, or atleast he didn't come in front of a camera if he did. The deer my dad shot the other day (11pt) was shot within a 20 acre area where I predicted he would be shot.
This even during the rut. Three of them were shot either peak rut or the late stages of the rut. Two others were shot during mzl or opening of rifle. Still in those core areas where almost all pics of them were taken.

Not all were shot this year. Although three were. We've also had one 4.5 that we never had a picture of shot.

What is your point AS? I can think of quite a few mature bucks that we have killed or had killed that were over a mile from where we had numerous pics and previous sightings. I personally think each and every buck has their own personality and traits, with a wide range of differences.

I just read in a post where BSK said radio collared studies have shown where the older bucks get, the more they tend to stay in smaller core areas.
I've seen the same thing on our property. Even chasing does during the rut. Even those searching in the pre-rut and those searching in the latter stages of the rut. I guess that would be my point.
Not every buck we've killed, even pointed out we shot one 4.5 we never had a picture of. I got another deer that I believe is 4.5 that we've never seen and only a few pictures. I'm guessing he doesn't live on us the majority of the time.
There is no doubt, that every single buck over 3.5 years old (and two 3.5y/o's) we've shot the last 4 years, except one, was shot within a small core area where if not all, at least 90% of trail cam pictures of them were taken. As I think back actually, only one of them had a picture took out of no more than a 100 acre block and it was post-season the year before he was shot. We have as many as 9 cameras running on 1000 acres at a time. If they were moving around, especially preseason and post season, we'd know it I would think.
The yearling and 2.5's I get pictures of all over the property from summer til earl spring. Then it seems they lock down in a particular area for the most part. There are exceptions, one that is still there (I hope) is one of them. I get pics of him all over and I know he is at least 4.5.

I'm wondering if habitat plays a role?
We don't have any agriculture nearby. Not for several miles anyway. I'm guessing deer with agriculture nearby may tend to move that way late season (when all other food is exhausted) and summer (when crops like soybeans are preferred).
Or in big woods, if no plots exist, they may move farther certain times of the year for food. We don't have that problem with the variety of food we have naturally and that which we plant.
If we lose any to the fact that some bucks do relocate from summer to fall, I haven't seen it. That or they return by early January, which is possible I guess.

These radio collar studies are very interesting to say the least. I wish someone would conduct one here in East TN??

You bet habitat plays a role, especially if "good" habitat is limited. I believe deer will hold tighter to patches of good habitat.

It all depends on the habitat. In the midwest, during the rut, a mature buck may travel three or four miles every night in search of a hot doe. He travels at night due to the open country. In thick cover a mature buck may not travel 400 yards.
A mature buck...or any deer for that matter, is only going to travel as they need to, to find what they are looking for. And BSK is right, as they get older, they travel less because the does come to them. But if the food source changes, they move as far as they have to.
I don't think the old buck that lived with me for almost eight years ever went more than 600 yards in his life.
