I got enough for two packs and rabbits are as plentiful as they have ever been. Went twice last weekend and never took the dogs over 15 minutes to jump one.

This all on public land.

Now quail is a different story. IN all the walking I do with dogs during the year, I might jump 20 total quail a year and I know I have to be hunting the best quail habitat around. The quail situation is sad indeed.

I must apologize. I was speaking from Haywood County experience and not from GENERAL persective.

Today's farmers and even sod farmers have cleaned most every thicket and fencerow to the point that rabbits and quail have no place to breed and escape predators....at least that's the case in Haywood County.

Areas where I used to hunt that had the prettiest set-up of fencerows, ditches and half acre thickets and brushpiles now look like parking lots (clean and flat).

I'm not dissing the farmers . they gotta do..blah, blah, blah.

I will say that, back in the day, I had five beagles that would run the ears off a rabbit. I enjoyed many many days hunting them. Later, after I lost those dogs, I teamed up with a fellow hunter that had some dogs and we continued to hunt for a few more years.

I love to rabbit hunt, when there's rabbits. Love to quail hunt as well. Did that off horseback for many years with my father.

These days, I'm in a tree or on the couch....haha.

I will go on the occasional duck hunt or squirrel hunt, but not like I used to......

I guess you can say that I retired to the deer stand....

And, I have nothing to complain about right now, but give me a minute..haha.

Good post Bottom Hunter. I agree with most of what u say. You did leave out the part about deer hunters have become the laziest hunters. Most take the easiest rout to stand, use 4wheelers etc. In doing this along with going in the woods more during the off season to feed, run cameras, scouting to much etc without being cautious has made the deer smarter and more aware of us which has made them more nocturnal and harder to hunt.

Don't get me started on how technology has made the deer hunter more lazy than skilled.........sometimes I think that they should just call it deer shooting......

But, that is for another time...... ;\)

Now back when Bowriter first started, you had to go up hill both ways, in two feet of snow, barefooted, wearin' nothin but a fig leaf to go hunt deer. You would sit for a whole year and maybe never see a deer track. These kids today just don't realize how good they got it! LOL!
LOL, I hear ya, and if you dont believe it just ask him, he will tell ya all about it!

Back in 1974 when I first started hunting deer, I believe that the only thing more harder to find than deer were deer hunters....

I believe that the limit was ONE antlered deer per season.

if you went to a local convenient store at that hour of the morning 4-5 a.m.), the only people there were cops and paper chunkers....

Things have come a long way, for sure.
