Several, here are a couple
1)My brother and I took his 8 year old on juvinile for the first time this year. It was chilly and we didn't want him to get cold, so we layered him up with enough clothes for two kids. He didn't get cold, but when the spike walked out, he had so many clothes on he coulden't see through the scope because it was so far away from his eye. Lesson learned!
2)I will never wish for a bumber white oak crop again. Got my wish this year and had a hard time with patterns. Next time I will wish for a bumber crop on one or two trees! Lesson learned!

Wouldn't say I learned it more like just remembered that a trophy buck is just icing on the cake. Good times with good friends is where I truly find my enjoyment in the outdoors...........Yeah, I had my cake without icing this season but enjoyed every bite of it.

Good thread.
1. When it snows, hunt the ridges that face south. They warm up better/faster, lose the snow quicker, and the deer will favor them over a snow-covered ridge that is in the shadows.
2. With a big acorn crop, after most of the crop is down, listen for the trees that are still dropping (they are also the oaks that are late dropping leaves). Deer will favor these trees...they can hear the acorns hit the ground just like I can, and they know they won't have to dig em out of the leaves.
3. Hunt every clear, cool day you can. Rest on rainy, windy days and days with a high over 55. The deer don't seem to like em any more than I do. (I knew this, but it got hammered in this year.)

5. Shooting at coyotes during archery season is expensive, if you shoot $10 broadheads.
6. Sometimes toms gobble more in the fall than they do in the spring.
7. Persimmon trees are not the sure-fire deal I always had them cracked up to be.

I learned the realities of the TN deer herd's age structure. Which trumped anything else that I picked up along the way this season.

I didn't learn anything new, but some old knowledge was reenforced. COVER IS KING, especially in high hunting pressure areas.

three things......
Don't let what other people are doing around you ruin your hunting. It took awhile for this to sink in.
Always go with your gut.
Never get down from your stand for any reason (if possible)as long as you are not leaving. I can still see his rack as he's running through the trees......
If I didn't learn something every year, I'd probably lose interest.

Good topic...... No matter how many times my dad told me not to hunt food plots when we have bumper crop of acorns, I will listen from now on.......when you wake up early and get gun out of safe check and make sure you put bolt back in it after cleaning and not 80 miles from home after you climb a tree.....do not miss muzzy season next year if you want a deer....never leave camp without TP......

When the hunting is hot go solid til it cools off. You have about a week window dont miss it.

When you have a good deer found, go ahead and kill him while the getting is good, saving one for later doesnt always work out!
