With the majority of everyone's season either ending already or coming to an end, I would love to hear some of the lessons learned this year. I use this site to learn and learn and LEARN some more, so I value the posts I read on here and more than not, I try them out in the woods myself. So whether it be something you knew but forgot (and got a rude reminder) or something completely new to you share it with the others. Maybe its something thats got you stumped, and somebody can chime in. I just always find it interesting, and very valuable.

I was reminded not to hunt places you don't have confidence in. I hunted some new spots and the whole time I was hunting my mind was telling me I was wasting my time. I guess because deer movement was so slow for me this year, I abandoned my best stands in hopes of turning things around. I did find some productive places, but also found spots I have zero confidence in. Normally I would pack up and move, but this year made me try some crazy stuff. Looking back, I sort of feel like I wasted a season, but hopefully in the long run it will all pay off.

I know this sounds crazy but i saw a pattern on deer movement that i never noticed before.

If i hunt my large farm one day and see lots of deer, don't hunt it the next day because i wont see anything.

If i hunt the same farm one day and see nothing,go the next day and see lots of deer.

Sounds crazy but it was like this all year. And i hunted 50-60 days this year and could see this pattern every time out.

Lots of lessons learned for me this year, my 1st year hunting.

-Dont rely on fixed stands. Now I have a climber and I love it.
-Dont use a ML during gun season (lost a 12pt at 30' due to misfire well into gun season)
-Does are tasty. Take more than two.
-Dont overdress for the trip in. Getting sweaty before sitting still for long periods inm freezing temps sucks.

Several, here are a couple

1)My brother and I took his 8 year old on juvinile for the first time this year. It was chilly and we didn't want him to get cold, so we layered him up with enough clothes for two kids. He didn't get cold, but when the spike walked out, he had so many clothes on he coulden't see through the scope because it was so far away from his eye. Lesson learned!

2)I will never wish for a bumber white oak crop again. Got my wish this year and had a hard time with patterns. Next time I will wish for a bumber crop on one or two trees! Lesson learned!

Wouldn't say I learned it more like just remembered that a trophy buck is just icing on the cake. Good times with good friends is where I truly find my enjoyment in the outdoors...........Yeah, I had my cake without icing this season but enjoyed every bite of it.

Good thread.

1. When it snows, hunt the ridges that face south. They warm up better/faster, lose the snow quicker, and the deer will favor them over a snow-covered ridge that is in the shadows.

2. With a big acorn crop, after most of the crop is down, listen for the trees that are still dropping (they are also the oaks that are late dropping leaves). Deer will favor these trees...they can hear the acorns hit the ground just like I can, and they know they won't have to dig em out of the leaves.

3. Hunt every clear, cool day you can. Rest on rainy, windy days and days with a high over 55. The deer don't seem to like em any more than I do. (I knew this, but it got hammered in this year.)

4. Put the dam pull rope on the second rung of the ladder. Put the dam pull rope on the second rung of the ladder. Put the dam pull rope.....

5. Shooting at coyotes during archery season is expensive, if you shoot $10 broadheads.

6. Sometimes toms gobble more in the fall than they do in the spring.

7. Persimmon trees are not the sure-fire deal I always had them cracked up to be.

Pretty much the mock scrape deal for me. I made a couple and just about every time I went in for an evening hunt in that area, there were deer hanging close by it. ;\)

I didn't learn anything new, but some old knowledge was reenforced. COVER IS KING, especially in high hunting pressure areas.

three things......

Don't let what other people are doing around you ruin your hunting. It took awhile for this to sink in.

Always go with your gut.

Never get down from your stand for any reason (if possible)as long as you are not leaving. I can still see his rack as he's running through the trees......

If I didn't learn something every year, I'd probably lose interest.

Good topic...... No matter how many times my dad told me not to hunt food plots when we have bumper crop of acorns, I will listen from now on.......when you wake up early and get gun out of safe check and make sure you put bolt back in it after cleaning and not 80 miles from home after you climb a tree.....do not miss muzzy season next year if you want a deer....never leave camp without TP......

Funny because I had a farm to hunt one time and I swear that they were on a 3 day rotation. I would see deer one day and then not see deer for 2 days. This was before trail cameras though, so it could have just been coincidence.

I believe that my learning lesson was just how effective rattling can be in the right spot, at the right time. I bought the "Pack Rack" by Knight and Hale. I believe this is the dest invention since toilet paper!

I also witnessed something that I had read about many times. Though I have always believed it, I got to see different bucks cruising on downwind sides of thickets. When the wind changed, the bucks changed sides too. I was hunting on the North end of a thicket. I could mmonitor trails that ran North/South. There was one on the East side of the thicket. There was one on the West side of the thicket.

I had several bucks that I considered regulars in the area. When the wind would blow from the East, these bucks would always cruise the West trail. When the wind switched from the West, the bucks would use the Eastern trail.

I even watched a buck cruising one day. As he was coming down the trail, he abruptly stopped, made a 90 degree turn and eased up into the thicket to a bedded doe which I never knew was laying there......Crazy!

No matter how confident you are, how much you prepared, or how much you scouted, a mature buck will only show his face when he wants to. I have been blessed for the last 8 years straight to see a mature deer. This year, although I know they are there, did not see one mature deer(4.5 or older). And that is why I continue to go, you just never know.

This is not something that I learned from this season, but one challenge that (I believe) is the hardest!

That no matter how good "new" or "old" stands are with a high probability of seeing mature bucks or deer in general are, and with the perfect wind direction, getting to that stand undetected is the most challenging of all. - Even if you plan it a year in advance and wait for the right time.....It ALL depends on each deers' specific mood that morning or afternoon.

Remember - Even though you think you got there undetected, most of the time, you probably dont have a clue that they know your there

This did happen to me more than normal this year....even though I would go in from a totally different direction to a particular stand. It was almost as if they were waiting there and watching to see if I came in the same way I scared them from the last time. Too many times for it to be coincidence. They are some smart little critters!!! ....BUT I love the challenge \:\)

Do not overlook cover in areas where you think there probably isn't a mature buck hanging out. The biggest buck taken off our lease this so far (9 years) was taken in an area where I have never hunted because it didn't look that good.

Not Hunted + Didn't Look Good to Me + Good Coverage near thick stuff = Big Buck we didn't know existed.

A prussic knot and a good safety line attached to my harness works great for climbing into lock on stands above 25 ft.

The top portion of a summit can be raised above your head while in the tree and if the seat is positioned correctly can keep you dry in the heaviest of downpours.

Deer would rather bed on the south side.

Getting windproof clothing is worth the investment.

Cutting up your own deer isn't really that hard...but it is time consuming.

It's easier to gut a deer in the daylight than at night.

Deer will go where ever they want, when they want.

The dirt road between the inlaw's property and the neighbors property is like an electric fence when I'm hunting...and the deer don't dare cross it!

Been there and done that almost, I did reload a primer, but thats it. Pulled the trigger the second time looking for a boom and got a poof.

I learned not to take my bow while rifle season is open when there is a mature buck on the property that you desperately want to kill. Even if you haven't seen him or got a pic of him in over a month. \:\(

Too funny! I'll see what else I can come up with to freak you out! Like I said, you come up with ideas when you get tired of stripping down just to relieve yourself ;\)

Mine would be, park futher away from the woods. And leave earlier on your way to the woods, and take you slow sweet time getting into the stand.. No need 2 speed climb up a tree.

I learned, Don't rely on others to hang a stand for you, or when you climb up in the tree for the first time and shine your light forward, you will see a large tree with 8 big forking branches with very few shooting lanes. I learned that the hard way when 3 walked out 50 yards from me and I had no shot.

I learned to buy a climbing stand for next year so I can move where I want.

I learned that no matter how cold I get or how frustrated I get, I love being in the woods and observing nature and wildlife with no one to bother me.
