Would it be a good idea to hunt around any water that ISN'T frozen these last few days? I'd say that the deer are getting kinda thirsty. Flowing creeks is what I had in mind.

i would think water is the least of thier worries right now. Between food and water, water is the one thing that you'll die from not having in the shortest time. Animals will dehydrate faster in these temps than in the summer. Food they eat now will also has less moisture in it than in summer/ spring.

guess you must hunt some dry areas.there are a lot more creeks and other watering areas in a deers home range than you would think. They seem to need it way more in temps over 90 than they do now.if you think it will work then have at it.

Deer need water every day. Lots of land has ponds and sinkholes that hold water. All those are frozen now.Its a great idea to hunt running water now.

Ok then hunt them. Was just saying there are a lot of water out there now even with ponds and other areas frozen.the areas I hunt have tons of these creeks so hunting them would not be good but if hunting flat land with not much water it might work.

You are right. There are more sources of water than we realize in the woods. Even if a leaf is holding a small puddle of water lying on the ground it would be possible for it to be drank. My theory was that it all would be frozen now. Could a wildlife pro help out on the winter vs summer water needs?

Deer get the vast majority of their water needs from the plants they eat.

Deer like water, but they can get what they need most times without actually watering every single day.

OK This is from BigGameGuy on the TWRA Q's forum.
"Although their metabolism may increase in bitter cold weather , it would probably be an insignificant increase in the amount of water they would need to consume to maintain that metabolism. In other words, I doubt hunting a water source would prove to be more productive than at any other time of year. Also, there is probably more available water on the plants they consume due to the frost and/or snow so I imagine water sources would be even less necessary." That blows my whole strategy out of the water (no pun intended!). Any questions?

WQell he may be the big game guy but i think that is hog wash.No way a deer can get his daily requirements for water through the frost on plants he eats.Snow maybe, frost never.
1 of my farms is more than a 1/2 mile from nearest water hole.I put in water hole and see the same deer come in daily and drink for 3-5 minutes every day.No way they can get that much water from frost.

I've seen properties with plenty of deer and there is no running water on these properties or anywhere nearby. Deer will find any tiny amount of standing water, even rain-water or melted snow in curled leaves.

Deer can do just fine with no standing water at all (no ponds, no creeks etc.) They can always find a mud hole or again, utilize what they get internally from plants.
Deer exist even in near desert environments, with no standing water for miles.
Now if you create a water hole, they will certainly use it, but they don't require it to survive.

I KNOW THAT YOU GUYS KNOW MORE THAN I. But I still have a hard time with the puddle (mud) theory right now. It's been below freezing for days. I'd say pretty much that all of the mud is ice. I was at the lake today and the shadow side of the island was ice FAR out into the water. The sunny side was ice free and quiet comfortable. Now the frost. I am leaving my house every morn just at sunup. Yes there's frost but its been VERY thin I'm assuming cause the air's so dry. Overall, I would agree that the deer aren't going to dehydrate or have a battle over water anytime soon but it just seems that they would be a bit more thirsty right now. Is Gatorade baiting?

I'd say that the educated ones are correct but it's just hard for me to fathom it. I guess it would be hard for me to believe alot of the things deer do unless I saw it for myself. They are very tough animals.
