With the season gettin closer to the end my thoughts are already wondering about next season. I hunt over and open field with my neighbors set a side ground layin only 30 yards to my right. Most of the time the field has something growing in it! But this year with all the rain we got in the early fall we did good just to be able to get the crops out of the field. As u may have guessed I depend on the fields to be my food plot. It attracts the deer off my neighbor and most of the time I have to wait past dark just to climb down. But since good ol mother nature taught me a lesson this year I want to have a back up plan for next season. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm thinkin bout something like a mineral site. Just want something habit forming and can help the deer out at the same time.

mineral sites are good, but use drops off in fall, you can always just overseed an area with,oats/wheat/rye and get pretty good gerination

over seeding is out of the option! Come spring the fields will be planted in corn or soybeans.

Nope! As soon as they are harvested Wheat is planted right behind it. Thats why I said I depend on the field itself to be my food plot. I'm looking for something else to be habit forming just in case we get to much rain to get the crops planted again.

Food plots are the only option IMO.

When it comes to attracting deer to a property during hunting season, food is good but cover is better. Now both is perfect, but if I had to choose one over the other, I would choose cover every time (unless neighbors' properties were heavy in cover).
Deer will travel considerable distances at night to eat, but older deer that are more sensative to hunting pressure will spend their daylight (legal hunting time) hours in or near thick cover, or anywhere they can find sanctuary from hunting pressure.
