Im not going to call myself a better deer hunter over another person..But i'll give my pointer..You need to hunt everyday you possibly can..Spend every hour possible in the stand that you can..If you don't ML hunt, get you a ML,if you don't bow hunt, get you a bow..Just being in the stand greatly improves your chances of seeing/killing deer..Ive not killed any major scoreing deer since i've gotten serious about deer hunting, but I have killed mature deer since i've gotten serious about it..I live for deer hunting,I could not imagine the hours i've sit in the stand this year..
I've got a brother in law that gets ticked when ever I kill a mature buck, and he asks me how I do it almost every year..I just tell him that Im in the woods in my stand and not in the bed..He sits around all year and waits till rifle season and then just wanders aimlessly through the woods without scouting or anything..Just get in the woods, and be there year round..Not hunting year round but doing trail cams, getting to know your hunting property, and just walking around looking for sign..
On one property I hunt,I know it so well, that when ever I see a deer on it,I pretty much know where I came from and where its heading..

I started squirrell hunting first. Great woods experience. My Dad took us deer hunting later on, but it was always in the woods and we were not driven to a "shooting house". Before the season began, he took us out and showed us things about the deer woods.
It was in the mid 60's at that time in Lewis and Hickman County, so you can imagine how thrilling it was, just to see a deer track. I was on crutches when we first went on opening day. My dad and brother left the truck well before daylight and I sat in the truck. I want to get in the woods anyway, but Dad wouldn't let me. Good choice on his part....looking back.
They didn't kill a deer that morning, but Dad cut down a fresh rub with his knife and brought it back to the truck, just to let me see it. I was thrilled to death.
Little things that a grown up might think is unimportant to a kid.......could be life changing.........to a kid.
I was one of those kids.

Talk deer hunting with those that will share any information. Listen and with experience you'll be able to weed out the bs. Spend as much time in the woods that you can. Plan your vacation ahead of deer season to include prime hunting times for your area. Weekend warriors kill alot of deer but many times what you're looking for may not be happening on the weekends you can hunt and things will turn on a dime around rut time. Consecutive days spent in the woods help to narrow the odds more towards your favor. Don't get caught up in the stereo-typical deer hunter and don't be afraid to try something different.

Learn the property you hunt and how the deer use that property, food sources, travel corridors, bedding areas, and funnels. Do this during late Jan and Feb, and stay out of there until the season opens the following year. Hang stands to hunt prime areas which are on the downwind side of the movement areas, and do not hunt if the wind is bad. However, to be successful you must spend as much time as physically possible in the woods.
Do not stomp around in August or Sept, messing with trail cams or trying to find hot sign. You should know where the food sources are from the previous winters scouting.
More people screw themselves over by wandering around and "scouting", approaching stands the wrong way, playing the wind wrong, and driving too close to their stands.
Deer are fairly predictable and with a little forethought aren't that hard to kill.
