I'll still spend a lot of time in the woods when I am up to it and I have a kid I am mentoring. I just have no desire to kill anything. Years ago, Robert Ruark wrote in a short story that at some point, hunters reach a point when they decide they have killed enough. I have reached that point. I have no need to kill a deer just to boost my ego and since I can no longer eat red meat, I have no need to kill one.

I have turned over all my stands to the kid and am still learning about deer. I just don't want to kill one anymore. A year or so ago, if I didn't kill six or eight, I thought the season was a bust. About the third day of bow season this year, I passed up a doe and two bucks. And then it came to me. What the he11 am I doing out here if I'm not going to shoot one. Since then I have been back in the woods twice-just walking.

Thanks for your kind comments. I'll always pass along what little I know when asked.

I remember when my Dad quit. Not really sure what happened, he just quit going. Back in '03 he decided he wanted to Turkey Hunt some. We sat in a blind that was easy to get to and pretty much shot the breeze all morning. Got to hear 4 birds and had one gobbler do a "drive by". He told me "I really enjoyed this. Thanks for taking me." I've got a picture of me and him an my youngest son still camo'd up when we got home.
I treasure it because that's the last time he set foot in the woods.
I guess it happens to everyone in some form or another.
Bowriter, I'd like to shoot the breeze and look and some of your pictures. Don't have anymore old buddies that say "Well boy when I was your age...."

Hatchee, I'll tell a quick story. Back 30 years ago, there were five of us. We were all in about the same station in life, just starting to be able to afford to travel and hunt or fish. We were partners and enjoyed the same things. We hunted and fished together and went to a lot of top spots. Our companionship was as important as what we killed or caught.

I am the only one still alive.

For the last few years, I have hunted alone. The campfires were lonely and killing something just didn't mean anything. I killed a deer for meat and it didn't matter what I killed. I know exactly what your dad felt. I suspect he was a pretty good woodsman in his day. It doesn't help much to say, "Do you remember when we..." when all the ones who could remember are gone.

I still enjoy the woods. I enjoy the sights and sounds and most importantly the smells. I just don't enjoy killing just to say I killed something. I have finally realized it has no purpose or importance.

My mzl has been loaded for two years. Today I will take it apart and clean it and put it up. My bows are in cases and packed away. A month or so ago, I sold one of my bass boats. All my shotguns and rifles are clean and cased. The handguns are still loaded and within easy reach \:\)

But if these turkeys don't quit crapping on my patio, I'm going to start again \:\)

Bowriter,

Just a thought from an outside perspective.

I have always thought that life is truly about collecting good memories. Kinda like my chosen profession of photography, just collecting them on film.

When we get old and can't mountain climb, race a motorcycle, or jump a creek anymore, we have our fond memories to enjoy and share with others. You have the unique gift and ability to share those memories with others through your writing.

Maybe that is your next stage. Writing your memories into stories the way YOU want to. Just for fun.

Oh and don't think the fond memories are over. You are creating new ones every day. Think about the young buck you are teaching to hunt and his perspective. When he gets to be your age, imagine the stories he will be telling and the part you played in them.

John, I'll be 56 in a few days. Over the last year or two I have had a bad moment or two wondering what it will be like when I wake up one morning and know that it's my last hunt, or the last time I'll string up a fly rod. I'll tell you it's a comfort to think that I may reach a point where I have a choice, and can decide "it's time" before it gets to be a case of "just can't". Those darn hills get steeper every single year.

My dad never hunted and all my uncles were way older than me. I've never been close to someone "laying it down". Thanks for some sharing your feelings on this.

I have an uncle who is 73. He lives in LA and taughth me how to hunt the swamps. He was one of my mentors and we have fished together every year at least once. He called Christmas day said he had not hunted a single day this year and had not had his boat out of the garage since August. When I told him I had sold my boat, he said he guessed he would sell his, too.

He is retired military (highly decorated) and has a good pention. Financially I am in pretty good shape. The sad thing is, we can afford to go anywhere and do anything and there is nowhere we want to go or anything we want to do.

I have lived a full and violent life and now I paying for it but I am content. I have seen and done things most people only read about. Now I'll just write about them. I have all the work I care to do and a loving wife and two super girlfriends \:\) I'm just through killing.

Can't ask for much more than that.
