I didn't kill a deer this year. I passed up three in the 2.5 hours I hunted. Funny thing is, it doesn't bother me a bit. I truly believe I am done.

There are few true hunters I have meet in my life that have reached the plateau of hunting that you have. For those of young age or hunting experience do not realize the level you have reached. if i reach the level of hunting where i dont kill anything i will in fact realize that i have quit hunting and started observing.....for which i will aptly call it that. As long as i am "hunting" my rifle, bow and muzzleloader will be barking......

Nothing wrong with it. It's not like you NEED to accomplish anything...otherwise, it'd be more like work.
Now, with your experience, you oughta pass your knowledge on to some up and coming hunters. Maybe write a book on hunting, stuff that you can pass on to others.
Maybe do a seminar at the Vous.

I'll still spend a lot of time in the woods when I am up to it and I have a kid I am mentoring. I just have no desire to kill anything. Years ago, Robert Ruark wrote in a short story that at some point, hunters reach a point when they decide they have killed enough. I have reached that point. I have no need to kill a deer just to boost my ego and since I can no longer eat red meat, I have no need to kill one.
I have turned over all my stands to the kid and am still learning about deer. I just don't want to kill one anymore. A year or so ago, if I didn't kill six or eight, I thought the season was a bust. About the third day of bow season this year, I passed up a doe and two bucks. And then it came to me. What the he11 am I doing out here if I'm not going to shoot one. Since then I have been back in the woods twice-just walking.

I remember when my Dad quit. Not really sure what happened, he just quit going. Back in '03 he decided he wanted to Turkey Hunt some. We sat in a blind that was easy to get to and pretty much shot the breeze all morning. Got to hear 4 birds and had one gobbler do a "drive by". He told me "I really enjoyed this. Thanks for taking me." I've got a picture of me and him an my youngest son still camo'd up when we got home.
I treasure it because that's the last time he set foot in the woods.
I guess it happens to everyone in some form or another.
Bowriter, I'd like to shoot the breeze and look and some of your pictures. Don't have anymore old buddies that say "Well boy when I was your age...."

Just a thought from an outside perspective.
I have always thought that life is truly about collecting good memories. Kinda like my chosen profession of photography, just collecting them on film.
When we get old and can't mountain climb, race a motorcycle, or jump a creek anymore, we have our fond memories to enjoy and share with others. You have the unique gift and ability to share those memories with others through your writing.
Maybe that is your next stage. Writing your memories into stories the way YOU want to. Just for fun.
Oh and don't think the fond memories are over. You are creating new ones every day. Think about the young buck you are teaching to hunt and his perspective. When he gets to be your age, imagine the stories he will be telling and the part you played in them.

John, I'll be 56 in a few days. Over the last year or two I have had a bad moment or two wondering what it will be like when I wake up one morning and know that it's my last hunt, or the last time I'll string up a fly rod. I'll tell you it's a comfort to think that I may reach a point where I have a choice, and can decide "it's time" before it gets to be a case of "just can't". Those darn hills get steeper every single year.
My dad never hunted and all my uncles were way older than me. I've never been close to someone "laying it down". Thanks for some sharing your feelings on this.

I remember clearly when my Dad made the decision to hang up his rifle for the last time...Oddly enough, he didn't seem sad or carry any kind of dis-satisfaction with his decision what so ever...In fact, he came across to me as being very content in his choice and even releived in an odd sort of way. Mountain huntin is hard work at best....I always felt it was kind of like Uncle Pen hangin up his fiddle...
Oh, he still goes on the trips, even at 82, he helps cook and run the cook wagon. Sometimes there will as many as 40 or 45 hunters/fishermen or better in camp to keep fed and cleaned up after...but the pursuit of the kill is a done deal for him.....

I think you were doing the same thing you've always done, taking advantage of an opportunity...pretty sure those were'nt the only 3 that you've let walk. Now, did I accompany you on one of those "walks"? If so, it was hardly a "walk", as I could hardly keep up with you, lol. When we got outta your truck I swear you turned part deer. I don't think I've ever had so much information/knowledge thrown at me in the 45 min or so we were out there. Thank you Mr Sloan for the "walk" and all you've done for and shared with the wildlife/hunting/fishing community. My calendar says Sunday night is official!! You gonna make it through the week?? Actually passed a paint can on the way to a stand yesterday and was wondering how in the he!!....

I do not need testsoterone replacement. I need a whole system replacement. Reservoir, pumps and hoses. Then we can work on the fluids.

You'd have to take away more than that!!
A few weeks ago she went to the doc and the doc told her she only had two weeks to live...I asked the doc if there was anything we could do and he said...well, yes...send to live with Bowriter for those two weeks.
Cindy was confused and asked if she would live longer if she spent the next two weeks with Bowriterand the doc said...
"no, but it will seem like you did"...I'm trying to talk her out of it but she might be ringing your doorbell soon.

She came to live with me, she wouldn't last 20 minutes. I will not tolerate babbling idiocy. That's why they make 20# test line...to sew a mouth shut.

Coach a few years, I just flat quit doing funerals. I preferred to remember folks as they were when they were alive.
