BSK.. I noticed you said the last few years y'all have cut down on your doe killing due to the EHD outbreak a few years back. My question is how long will it take to get the numbers back up to normal or whatever they were before the outbreak. You may have answered this alot so sorry in advance, I was just curious.

I'm not BSK and I have no idea how severe the outbreak was on his land but normal recovery is three years or less. Often the herd is in better shape after EHD, once it recovers.

I can't say for sure about other parts of Tn. But where I hunt in southern middle Tn our property was hit real hard with EHD appox 7 years ago. From the harvest data the bucks weight have went up, and rack size went up but total number of bucks taken went down. Deer sights in general have went and stayed down since. So who really knows how long it will take the herd to rebound from EHD. How ever like bowriter said the herd is probaly in better shape after EHD.

Ive noticed that deer seem to be much healthier after the outbreak. Why is that bowriter?

Aint that sumpin? \:\)

The reason is exactly less competition for food and in some cases, more disease resistance. Ma Nature is pretty good about making things workout. Hunting and humans are what screws her up.

If there is little hunter harvest of females, deer herds generally bounce back to pre-disease levels in 2 to 3 years (a healthy deer herd can double its population every two years).

However, considering the liberal doe limits we have, the deer herds hit hard by EHD may never bounce back to what they were before the disease outbreak, and that's a good thing. Many of those herds (especially in Unit L) were too dense to start with. Mother Nature just did what we hunters weren't willing to do--kill enough deer to reduce the population to more healthy levels.

I think we will see some population bounce back, but again, probably not to pre-disease levels. The rebound in population appears to have been slowed by two years of poor fawn survival (probably due to the two severe late summer droughts we experienced in '07 and '08).
