I took a friend hunting and he had 7 walk within 20 yards of his blind. 6 made it past him alive. He had fun.

Left out today around 10:30 and passed a field on 840 (private land) around 10:45. Big 8-10 pt standing out there with two does. Got to the WMA and did some still hunting. jumped a couple in a cedar thicket and walked some more. set up in another cedar thicket and sat for a while. got up to move, took a couple of steps and I see three standing there watching me . Tried to shoulder my gun and they ducked back into the brush they had emerged from. Sat on a field edge for the last hour and half of day light and saw nothing.

I got a new climber and took it up to the ridge this morning where there are numerous new rubs and scrapes this week. I had a nice position in the middle of the rub line in 200yards of hardwoods with thick pine stand to one side and 2yr old regrowth to the other. This is where the action has moved since they've gotten wise to all of my fixed stands. THis is my 1st year hunting and I've been wary of climbers (one of my buddies fell once and never shuts up about how dangerous they are) but I picked one up in desperation ( a Summit 180 max). I loved using it today... total sense of freeedom after so many days in fixed stands.
Anyway, I thought I was going to fill my last tag with the 12pt that my ML missfired on a few weeks ago. Right spot (totally torn up all of a sudden, never hunted this year), great position 20ft up, nice cold weather, but the damned wind was relentless. Didn't even see one squirrel move in 8hrs. Even when the wind let up a bit around noon through 2pm... nada.
It was truly one of those days that I couldn't help but think about why I left a warm bed with a pretty gal by my side for a cold tree stand on a freezing, windy, full moon day. Still better than not hunting, but it did test my resolve.
8 days left of the season, a new stand/spot, and that big buck still in rut trumped all reason. Tomorrow im out of that stand by 9:30 and in one of my field stands for the afternoon. Wind should be better in these parts.

Early, early....in the right spot. Otherwise, sleep in and get in your stand about 9-10 a.m. and hunt the rest of the day. My guess is you will kill one before 1 or 2. I didn't believe it either until I tried it.
