Just saw a thread about a accident in the general forum and was wondering how many people on here have had a accident or been injured while using a treestand.
In 1985 when I was 19, using one of those old style, I believe they were called Baker treestands, I had one fall straight down the tree with me in it. I had left home that morning and headed down to Skyline WMA in Alabama. Told no one where I was going and there was no one around me. I don't even think they made a safty harness back then. All I knew was I was sitting in a tree with a bow, then I woke up on the ground. Don't remember anything about falling. Musta threw the bow cause is was like 30 ft from the tree. Thought I was going to die, blood was everywhere and I couldn't catch my breath. Had a very nasty cut on my arm, which was bleeding bad and it twisted both my ankles so I had to crawl back to the truck. Made it home but was sore for days and got like 30 stiches in the arm.
That old treestand may still be up there cause I left it, My bow happened to be lying on the way to the truck or it would have been left also. Didn't climb another tree till about 8 yrs ago. The safety equipment is the first thing I get out of the truck when I get to my hunting spot now!!!

Brother in law fell out of a lock on about five years ago. Knocked out his front teath and broke an arm.
We use safety belts now, and rarely use lock ons.
I was puttin a ladder stand up last year. Didn't put the clips that hold the base to the ladder. Base got lodged in the tree, came of and nearly wiped me out.
We use all the clips now.
Lessons learned!!!!!!!!

I was climbing down out of an old wooden box stand that I had no business in to begin with, when the second from top step broke. I went to grabbing and remember grabbing my rifle, so I let go. I tumbled down about 15 feet or so, and luckily the steps kept me from falling on my head or neck, they kind of flipped me. I was 16, it scared the crap out of me, and I thought I would be hurt..I wasn't, thank God. Its been 11 years, I've jumped out of planes and rappelled out of helicopters more times than I can count, but I still don't get in to many treestands. The three biggest deer I've killed have been on the ground, and I've had em come within 10 feet of me before. I just concentrate more on my cover scent, and a good tree that takes my outline away.

I had a near accident with Tree Lounge. I was about 25-30 ft up with the old style tree lounge. Back then, the safety belt was attached to the stand (brilliant!). I was sitting in the stand, all ready for a great hunt, when I reached in my pocket and there were the knobs that screwed on the bolts to hold the stand together in my pocket. I broke out in a cold sweat, eased around as easily as I could and got them screwed on there. I would have been okay, until I started climbing down...then it would have been a fast descent!!!

Nope- I put safety harness on when I get dressed and then I have no excuse to not wear it. Other day I laughed when I noticed I had it on while sitting in a fully enclosed box blind. I have 3 nice little reasons waiting on me at home that makes me wear my belt. Everyman's life is worth a few minutes and $25.00. JC your correct them old wooden steps are killers.

I never fell out of a stand before but i found an old terrace in the woods one time and sat down beside a tree there on top of it.It wasnt long i guess i nodded off but had the gun on the ground beside me. I woke up rolling down the terrace in to the bottom was a pretty good down hill grade but i thought when i got stoped how Dang stupid can a man get deer hunting and fall asleep i have never told anyone till now.My son in law was hunting about 200 yrds away but i wasnt about to tell him what i did.Wasnt hurt but thought it was stupid of me to do that.Never did it again.Been hunting 37 yrs now.

I was going to buy one of those old climbers off a buddy years ago. I got about 20 foot up a tree in the yard and the thing fell. I tried to hug the tree and the ride down tore all the skin off the inside of my arms.

Somewhere around 10 years ago I had made a morning hunt down a steep ridge in the bottoms. After I climbed down I carried my stand up on top of the ridge to hang it for rifle opener. I was up "almost" as high as I wanted to go but decided to cut just 1 more good sized limb behind me so I could get just a little bit higher. I was around 30 feet high at that point. When I cut the limb it snapped and broke hitting the back of my stand and dropping the V bar to where it was perpendicular to the cylinder of the tree. The stand and I went straight to the base of the tree. When I looked down one leg was straight and the other was bent at 2 very odd angles where I had snapped the leg bone in half at both points. It took a while to climb out of the stand. It took 5 hours laying on the ground crawling on my side towards the edge of the woods where my wheeler was parked. I tried to strap my broken leg down on top of my good leg but every once in awhile it would flop off and the pain was almost enough to make me pass out. Once I got to the wheeler it took another hour to get on it and drive the mile back to the truck. Then I drove up the ramps and into the back of the truck. It hurt like the dickens trying to get back down to the ground. I drove the hour home and then headed to the hospital. I wanted no part of an operation so I had a hard leg cast put on. The problem was that I couldn't swing my leg into the truck to drive. I now had the entire upcoming deer season off and I wasn't about to sit at home. I went back to the hospital for an operation and a removable knee cast. I don't think I missed a day deer hunting that year even though I couldn't use a climber again all season, albeit most of it on crutches. The following year I didn't hesitate to climb another tree and haven't balked since. HOWEVER! I now attach my climbing belt on the ground and don't remove it until I'm back on the ground. I wasn't wearing one when I fell.

A month ago my best friend had the third set of rapid rails come loose as he was climbing. He fell about 15 feet. Fractured his hip and ruptured disks in his lower back. Scheduled for back surgery this Monday.

Had a buddy cut a finger off this season with a climber. Stopped on a knot, didn't know it. Putting the seat strap around the tree, slipped off the knot. Finger between cable and tree. Drove himself 4 miles out on 4wheeler, then to Hospital. Sewed back on and doing good. He got a nice 8pt the next day.
Just have to know the guy. Nothing stops this fellow from hunting.

I Posted this story last year, a year that he is missed...
A FALL STORY
DEDICATIED TO:
Brian
This is a story that needs to be told and shared. Have you ever meet a person that thought he was superman, hardheaded and opinionated. A fearless type person that would listen to what you have to say but will do it his way regardless.
Well you have meet Brian.
Brian was a good husband and a devoted deer hunter. It didn’t matter how busy he was he always found time to hunt and love doing it. He also loved telling you the story of the hunt even if you already heard it. Brian was very successful at hunting. He let you know that too. This guy feared nothing. He didn’t care how high or how steep something was he had to get there. He had been asked to wear safety gear but in one ear and out the other. Fearless I say, forty feet up a tree was great by him.
This past fall season we lost Brian to a fall that took his life. He and a relative were hunting one evening and a shoot was heard by the relative and he headed to the truck to see if he could help Brian with his deer. After awhile the relative got worried and started looking for Brian that hadn’t shown up. After looking so long he called some friends. After they arrived and looked they called the rescue squad. Brian was found not far from his tree lifeless. He had fallen from his treestand that was 35 to 37 feet up. After the investigation they had found he had used his truck key as a cotter pin for the one he was missing in his climber. They think when he turned to shoot his deer that the key had broke and he feel to his death. Brian was not wearing a safety harness or tied off to the tree. Brian tried to crawl back to his truck for help by raping his belt around his chest so that he could breath, for his ribs were smashed and legs and arm broke. He crawled several feet till it took his life. Superman, I say so he refused to give up.
I believe that if Brian were with us today to tell you the story. For that I am sure and I wish he could. It goes without saying that Brian took short cuts. I’m sure he would wear a safety harness and make sure his equipment was in order. So please for us that new Brian don’t be like him.

my 1st experience with a treestand was one of them bakers. i think it was about 5 years before i climbed in another stand(not a baker).

For years I didn't wear a belt or harness but started wearing my harness every time about 10 yrs ago.I found that it gave me alot more confidence while in the stand as far as getting up and moving around.While they may seem uncomfortable or inconvenient they sure as heck beat the alternative

I have definetly been close to disaster but I always wear my safety belt, I use my safety belt as a tool to let myself relax when I shoot, I actually lean out away from the tree and let the harness hold me...therefor I don't have to try and keep my balance standing upright in the stand, it took a while to be able to trust the safety belt

I actually lean out away from the tree and let the harness hold me...
I do that too, when needed 51. But that is where you and stop in similarity. I don't even dream of bucks the size you SHOOT! 
Not to hijack, back on target.
No mishaps for me, but I had the typical prideful attitude of "I have way to good of balance to every fall from a stand". Then, three years ago my stand did a little 2" shift while I was standing off to one side. Had it not been for a small tree I was using for cover, I would have had screamed like a girl for 26 feet and cried like a baby after the 27th foot. Thankful, that little tree helped me to regain my balance.
Being the father to three young daughters, I vowed to myself that I would not climb another tree until I had a harness. HSS Pro vest was purchased that week.

Those who started deer hunting in the last 35 years or so probably no nothing of the old Baker stands. They were the only choice in climbers you had back then. They were death traps waiting to happen but I sure killed a world of deer out of them. The best use I've found for them now are for duck hunters who wade and hunt flooded timber with dogs. They are very lightweight and are great for hanging just above the water for the dogs to sit on keeping them out of the water.

I don't do trees anymore. Accident waiting to happen, safety belt
or not. At my age, if I did fall with the safety belt, I don't
know if I could get back upon the stand or not (ha). I would
probably dangle there until they missed me at work (ha).
After I started hunting from the ground, I got more confident and
started killing my best bucks ever. It takes more setup prep, but
to me it has been worth it.
I also used the old Baker stand years ago and quit before too
long. It took too long for the scabs on my chest and arms to
heal.

I never use straps. They wear out in a couple of years. I use chains and turnbuckles. Never had one fail yet and I have used them (hone-made and sto' bought) in all kinds of trees and weather.

About 5 years ago I was dismounting my Summit Viper after climbing down the tree and to this day I have no idea what happened - the top moved or the bottom moved and did a scissors action with me stuck in-between the two and me doing a flip out of the stand and landing flat on my back; luckily nothing happened except me wreching for my breath. I have always worn a harness, but now I'm attached to the tree before my feet leave the ground until they return to it. It may take an extra minute or so, but safety is worth it!

In 1978 or 79 I had an accident at AEDC. I had been sick the night before the hunt and the morning of the hunt I just had to go. So, on an empty stomach, I poured some black coffee, and off I went. I climbed as far as I could in the tree (only 15 ft luckily) and settled in to hunt. I didn't even have a seat to sit in, let alone a safety harness. After a while I started feeling rough, then this little black dot formed out in the woods in front of me. It started getting closer and bigger...then I blacked out. I awakened at the base of the tree, with the bow underneath me, but the arrow had come un-nocked and was lying beside me, bent. (Old Game Getter arrows) My Dad heard me fall, and I remember him later saying that he thought that I had shot a deer when he heard the sound of me hitting the ground. When I came too, I only had breath to yell out "Dad"! He was about 300 or so yards away, and I could hear him coming down the tree hard to get to me. After getting me out of the woods and to the hospital, I was found to have a severely bruised kidney, and a fractured vertebrae in my back, to which I still have trouble with from time to time. Folks, let me tell you, now that safety enhancements have come as far as they have, don't neglect them, they could possibly save your life someday. I sometimes wonder, what would have happened if that arrow had not been thrown clear of me....

Turned around getting out a of ladder stand 17 years ago and just fell flat-[censored] backwards on my butt/hip. Had to go to the chiropractor for years off and on after that. LUCKILY that is my only misshap, but it takes only ONCE.

While I have not had any bad falls, the stories being posted on here are really powerful. It's enough to make me never climb without a harness.
This should be locked to the top for a while IMO.
Stay safe guys. While we all love this sport of hunting, it's really a small thing in comparison to YOUR LIFE and the lives of your loved ones. Not worth the gamble. You will lose. Go to the casino if ya wanna gamble.

I also used the old Baker stand years ago and quit before too
long. It took too long for the scabs on my chest and arms to
heal.
I still have my first baker climber w/ hand climber too!

Only close fall I've had was at Catoosa this year. Was climbing down, the bottom fell to the ground. Luckily I was only bout 6' from the ground by then and just jumped. After wards I remembered that the two pieces were actually hooked together. Duh! Oh ya, I had forgot by safety harness at the house!

i have sat on the ground several times because of that. no harness=no climbing

99% of all falls are when ascending and descending when people dont have a safety belt attached. This can be solved easily with a climber by attaching the belt at the ground and moving it when you move the stand up the tree. Loc on is a lil more touble but you can attach a rope and use a prussic knot to slide up as you go. Even more dangerous is actually hanging loc ons, whic I used to do with no safety belt, but I have since learned it is much easier with a linemans belt, which is not only safer but much easier as it frees up both hands. The last 15 years have been much easier hanging loc ons since disovering the linemans belt.
I had my first fall just this year however, and it was putting up a 2 man ladder stand in the back yard to target shoot from. I fell 16 feet after the telephone pole actually snapped off at the ground while I was attaching the stand, freak accident and I was very glad I didnt have a safety harness attached to me and the pole as it would likely have killed me.

The Bakers were before my time, but i can't imagine them being much worse than the old Summits with the hand climber. I had a friend off work for a year after one slid coming down the tree and, of course, no harness. Mine has slid several times coming down, leaving my hand climber several feet up the tree. Needless to say, I've retired the old Summit. I don't even use a climber much anymore. I feel much safer in a loc-on or a ladder stand.

Oh, yes you can!! Prussik Knot on a rope is all it takes.

Yes you can......the old bakers were platformed out of a thin sheet of plywood....never remember a summitt with plywood anywhere on it.

I had my 55 yr old dad with me this year on opening day of gun season. He had to go spend 75 bucks on hunting license the night before because he had only been hunting his property. I shot my best buck of my career at 0645 hrs. Called my dad on cell phone and told him. He said give me a little while longer I've got deer. I went and looked at the rack in amazement, and like the excited kid I was again, excited and proud to show dad I called him again. He said come get me ( he never been to this spot before ). So I began to walk to his spot, once I get to about 25 yards from his stand he was stood up in a twelve foot ladder stand looking the other direction, and put his hand up for me to stop. A few seconds pass and he waves for me to come on. I look down hear a "ping" look back up and he is falling head first. I begin running to him as his face hits first into an approximate 3' rock. I'm in a profession to where I see tramatic events and handle them, but this was family, all sense of what to do leaves and I'm dads little boy again. I fight back tears from hearing the painfull moan and seeing the blood pouring out of his head, and instantly attempt to stabalize his head and neck while calling 911. To make this long story shorter, I'm a dad now myself, and to all the other dad's out there BUY & WEAR a safety harness. It doesn't matter how tough you are or big and strong, it only takes one mishap and I saw this firsthand. Don't put your loved ones through that type of event that can be prevented. Take an extra 2 minutes at the stand and wear it ! My dad had to be taken out of woods on a Gator by the local rescue squad and transported to a hospital. He was lucky he ended up only having a broken wrist (still to date in cast) and a broken elbow, and a severe concussion. I'm so thankfull to the Lord for letting him be ok. Dad's still kinda ill about buying the license and gettin to use it for about 45 minutes but happy to be alive, needless to say his hunting season was over for the year.

I fell 18 foot out of an old school summit that has the flip up seat attached to the platform, and the top was just the climber part. Luckily I didn't get hurt other than feeling like I had been hit by a train the next few days. I was made a beliver of the safety harness

this year, I had my first accident getting into a hang-on.....both straps broke at the same time....The stand hit the ground, but luckily I had a hold of a limb and still had one foot on the ladder (climbing stick)....
I guess I'm glad it happened when it did and not after I had gotten all the way in the stand....
I can't attach my safety harness to the tree until I get in to the stand.....
I guess after 37 years of deer hunting, I was due......right?

i still have one of those old summits i still use on occasion. it has never slipped with me. and the bakers were MUCH worse!!!
