I started hunting in 1970 at the age of 20. There were not a lot of deer in my area in those days and no one in my family bothered to hunt them. A college friend got me started. I saw only does that year (buck only season) but I became hooked on this great sport for life.

My dad use to put me and the dog in a sleeping bag under his treestand. I think I was around four years old and that was twenty years ago. I cant rembember not hunting. My son is three and he has been in the woods with me since last year when he was two. I never thought I would have to change a diaper in the woods but I have done it. Just glad he can go on his own now.

I started hunting from the time I could walk (early 1970's) through the Everglades following my dad in waste high water (swamps). Half the time he had to carry me on his shoulders through the deep swamps... We spent a lot of long nights down there pulling them coon dogs off those trees... My dad has coon hunted all of his life and has done a little deer hunting on the side... He introduced me to hunting and I took a liking to the deer hunting part... I was really lucky to have a father that introduced me to hunting and my father is now 60 and you can still find him pulling those dogs off the tree in those ole swamps of N. FL...
P.S. I don't own a coon dog and I'm the wimp in the family that only deer hunts..

Started hunting when I was 16. My father had just passed away and a couple of men he knew took me. All those guys are gone now but one. He is 77 now and we still hunt together. I remember that first hunt. We camped out for a weekend in an outfitter style tent with a stove in it. I borrowed a gun (an old 30/30 and froze to death. Never saw a deer but had a blast. I thought the "old" men were cool. They had lots of woodsman knowledge and could cook anything but gravey. I could do that so for breakfast I made the gravy for the weekend. It was a hit and I was in.

Just how long have I been hunting the great whitetail? Started deer hunting in 1978 at the age of 19. Shot an adult doe on the next to last day of firearm season. I have been shooting does ever since.
How long have you been hunting and what was your first hunt like? I started small game hunting with a friend from high school in 1977. If memory serves me correctly, the first time out I shot a Red Squirrel.

I also started in 1970 at age 14. Went with my dad, my older brother, and my best friend. We camped in the woods, not knowing there was a train track 20 yards behind the tent. When the first train came through at 1 am it sounded like it was coming right into the tent!
Saw about 25 does in two days, but no antlers. Didn't kill my first deer (a button buck BTW) until 1974.
Dad's been gone about 20 years now, and I haven't seen that friend in almost as long, but I still think of that dog gone train.

Started when I was 12, 1981. Dad had started hunting around 1961 for a few years and then stopped. Once I turned old enough, got him back into it. I quit hunting when I joined the Army in 1989 and finally picked it back up again in 2007.
Always went hunting with with a couple of Dads friends and their kids. At times there would be 5 of us in a 8x10 tent, then we moved up to the tent and a 16' trailer but had picked up two other guys in the hunting party.
Shot my first deer that year...nice 10pt Muley after 3 of us boys opened up on a heard of Elk. Got a calf, a spike elk and the muley.

Killed my first deer, in 1976, 4 point buck field dressed 124 lbs, shot with Model 1100 20 gauge slug in Dresden Tn.
Hunted deer from 1975 till the present date now. Man what a ride that I hope has many miles left.
Deer hunting to me has no competition, nothing comes close to the feeling of a buck stepping up out of the thicket, the fog, or into an open field. Then add family and friends to it, to enjoy their or my own harvests, Im sorry folks it just don't get better than that.
Life is good here in Tennessee, plenty of deer for Viper as you know him or Tony to my family and friends around here, to enjoy.
Over 30 years of chasing these awesome animals, to say I love to hunt and watch these whitetails would be an understatement, hunt hard fellas and gals, and hunt safe!

i had hunted squirrels and rabbits since i could carry a shotgun but didn't start deer hunting until early 80's at about 22 years of age. i went to a bonfire party one night and the host was serving venison, the first i ever had. i knew the only way to get more was to buy a rifle and shoot one. started out in the tellico/citico area and never saw a deer for the 1st 3 years. started bowhunting in 1984 and got with some guys at work that hunted in cumberland co. i finally saw my 1st deer in the woods and killed one with a bow in my 2nd season.

Started around 1978. Killed my first deer when I was 14 I think.
the first thing I ever killed (not counting birds with a BB gun) was a rabbit. I was 11 I think.
It didn't kill it, and that thing screamed and cried like a baby, and I had used my last bullet to shoot it and couldn't shoot it again. I ended up hitting it with the butt of my rifle. Made me cry, and I Swore I'd never hunt again after that.

started out squirrel hunting when i was around 8. That was in 1974. I don't think i got to go on a deer hunt until around age 13 or 14. There were alot of years when we wouldn't even see a deer. There just weren't as many around back then. I didn't kill my first deer till 1989 or 90.

I started in Jan. 1986 with stik. We went to Hickman County. I only got to hunt seriously for the last 3 years. It was sporadic before that due to family obligations. I killed one this season and one last season. I am a deer killing machine, huh?

John, Its hard to beat the Great White Hunter...
Nah you just have to be old and growup in the swamps of LA. Hunting was what we did cause we didn't have anything on TV but Soupey Sales.
I hunted every afternoon when I got home from school and all day every weekend and every holiday. I left every Friday night as soon as the football game was over I got through with azze chewing. Thanksgiving was spent at the camp in Saline swamp and two weeks at Christmas. I owned six or eight guns by the time I was 15.
Hunting is what I did, often taking precedence over girls.
I didn't have a computer or a Game Boy. I had a squirrel dog and a shotgun. I grew up watching sunrises and sunsets and how wildlife lived. I asked a million questions of the old swamp rats and most of them took the time to talk to me. They taught me how to read bayou and sloughs and slight ridges and trails through the palmeto and how to cook gumbo and shoot ducks.
I learned about deer and deer habits...as much as we actually knew back then and I learned to find my way out of 40,000 acres of swampp in the dark.
That's just the way I grew up. It was what I wanted. Then I went to college and studied that stuff.
Then I became a killer.
My bad. Right now, there is not a doubt in my mind, I have killed my last animal...except for skunks and possums.

I didn't come from a hunting family. I grew up in California and literally had never seen a real gun until I moved to KY in '76. I was shocked my parents let me go deer hunting for my first time in '79 when I was 17. I suspect my mother was the biggest influence as her father had been a hunter and she had hunted with him when she was little, growing up in central Wisconsin during the Depression.
The evening before my first hunt in Logan County, KY (with a brother-in-law that had grown up hunting black-tailed deer in northern California), I practiced shooting slugs from his double-barrel 16-guage. At 40 yards I couldn't even hit two square haybales stacked on top of each other. Undeterred, I went hunting the next morning wearing jeans, a blue-and-white plaid wool shirt, and a ski-vest (froze my butt off too!). My "treestand" consisted of two 2x4s nailed in the fork of a tree. About an hour and a half into the hunt a buck walks by at about 60 yards, and out of shear luck I somehow hit him through both lungs with that smoothbore, sightless 16 guage.
I've been hooked ever since.

Started deer hinting in 1974. Did not kill until 1979. One day I just decided to start Deer hunting. There was no one to teach me what to look for so I read a lot of books. Some helped some didn't. After I learned how to kill I killed almost every year. I am still learning how to hunt.

I am 46 years old and did not start deer hunting until 5 years ago.
My first kill was a bow kill double at the old VAAP WMA in Chattanooga.
I was the new hunter in the group that got drawn for that bow hunt. Everyone else had killed several deer in years past, but I was the green one.
Early on the first morning, three does came walking down the trail toward my stand. I had practiced shooting my bow all summer and felt totally confident. I shot one, re-loaded and shot another. Once I got all my stuff and the two deer back to the truck, a nice fellow in a jeep (another TnDeer member BTW) stopped and gutted one for me, then I gutted the other.
The best part of the hunt was showing up for lunch with the group. They say, "Did you see anything?" I say, "Yea, I got two in the back of the truck." They just laughed. But then one of them walked over and looked in the back of the truck and the rest is history. That was so much fun and I have been hooked ever since.
I owe this website for most of what I know about deer hunting, but I also have a long way to go before I become the Tiger Woods of deer hunting. Wait, that doesn't sound right.

I started in 1967 at age 15. My dad killed a good 8 pointer in Lewis County in 1967 and my brother and I were thrilled to death about it. He took us to the spot where he killed the buck and showed us how it all transpired. We couldn't wait to go too, so a few days later, my dad took us.
At about 7:30 two does came by my stand and I freaked out. I was so excited, that I had to go tell my brother right then! As I approached his stand, he whispers what are you doing? I hold up two fingers and whisper back..."I saw two does"! He responded by waving his arm at me.......to get the h.. out of here.
I guessed he wasn't as excited as I was, about seeing those two does.
Three years later, I lilled my very first deer. It was a 6 poninter and I killed him with a Bear Grizzly recurve bow with a 48# pull.

Started this year at age 35.... moved back home after a decade out west in school and working. I bought a piece of land with plans to build a house in the future and it was teeming with deer so I thought I'd go hunting one day so borrowed a bow and started talking to some friends who hunt about how to get started. I built a stand where I found some trails and harvested a doe on my 3rd day out, field dressed it based on what I'd been told, took it to be processed, ate some delicious chops and fell in love with the whole experience, much to my own surprise. If I've had a spare hour since that first week (my property is 2 miles from work and home), Ive been hunting or scouting. My freezer is full of healthy delicious meat, my soul is full of joy from the time spent in these beautiful Tennessee hills. Its not often that you get to experience something so completely life changing at my age... especially something that's been sitting right under your nose your whole life, but I'm certain that hunting will be part of my life from here out. Ive yet to have a day that I would trade for anything, even today in the freezing wind with nothing warm moving but my head swiveling in anticipation of what might walk out of the thick. My only regret is all the years of whitetail hunting I lost due to misconceptions and general ignorance of what it was all about. Better late than never!

It all started when my dad would take me along on rabbit hunts near Fayetteville, NC, when I was six years old. I was 12 on my first deer hunts near Albemarle, NC, in 1974. I remember it was COLD! It was after Christmas and the first hunt was in the evening in a pouring rain. The next moring the temp dropped to 5 with the wind blowing 25-30 MPH. My dad and his friend took shelter in a hay barn to try to get out of the wind and keep from freezing. They thought it wouldn't take long for me to get cold and quit. I hunkered down in a thicket and didn't move for 4 hours when they finally came and got me (so they could get warm). I didn't actually see my first deer until the next season in Sampson County, NC, down on the Black River. My dad and I hunted with a dog-hunting club and I watched my dad miss the one and only deer he ever shot at, and a few minutes later I knocked down a 6-pointer with buckshot. The dogs kept running it for miles and I never got it. My dad kept taking me to the same farm in Sampson County for the next three years until I could drive on my own. The day I got my driver's license (Dec. 18) I drove from the DMV straight home, packed my Volkswagen Super Beatle with camping gear, picked up a friend and went camping and deer hunting down on the Black River until Christmas Eve. I didn't kill my first deer until two years later five days shy of my 18th birthday. It was a mature 6-pointer that the dogs drove past me and my buddy.

Started Deer hunting in 1978 (the same year that I got married). I got my buddy started in 1979 and we hunted every year until 2007. He got cancer and died in 2008. I still hunt every year but it seems different now. I keep expecting to see him walking up a hollow...

Started when I was 16 on a juvinile hunt with my brother. Got my first deer that year on 12-16-1989. A 3 pointer. 20 years ago and I remember it like it was yesterday.

Cool thread, Double D!
I am always interested at the age hunters get started. I know most get started as kids or in their early teens. Others get started later in life, like myself or Blanton (cool story, btw!). Like he said, better late than never!
