I have never been one to want baiting, but.. in my position now.. when every deer in the community in on one mans farm because he feeds the heck out of them with standing corn you cannot compete.. I have a shooting house, real nice, built it when my girls started hunting, my 7 year old cant be still but in the "house" it doesnt really matter.. I take my 7 yr old and my 11 yr old daughters hunting when I can.. It has now gotten to the point they dont want to go with me anymore because the only glimpse of a deer we see is through bionoculars 100 yards off.. by the time I get the wee one lined up and the glasses pointed in the right direction the deer have moved on.. I spend hours in my stand, I sometimes take my lunch and stay all day.. it is dis hearting when you spend a full day and not one single deer jumps the fence from the "corn sanctuary" to come over and eat fescue.. I have already been looking at some 4 row planters.. next year there will be corn growing on my farm just for the deer.. the whole reason I bought the farm was for hunting and now there is nothing to hunt.. I had it good for 8 years until my new neighbor moved in.. This is becoming just like racing or tractor pulling.. the ones with the big money finishes first..

Knew a guy once who planted a whole field of fescue and couldn't figure why the deer didn't flock to it. I laughed my butt off.

All of my statements are just my opinion. I don't care how any of you hunt. That is strictly your business. My column this week was in response to something that is happening here and I just wanted my voice heard. I oppose baiting, feeding and in many cases food plots. But I could care less what anybody else does as long as it is legal. Some of what is going here, is not. But it is none of my business.

I will say, late season scouting can be the very best time to become intimately familiar with the land you hunt, things learned now can be super valuable next Fall.

I always felt that post seaon scouting was best accomplished right after the season had just closed....you can use that if you want to!... \:\/ ;\)

I usually never spent more than 3-6 weeks post season scouting. "Look at the woods when they are naked." I had a young editor edit that statement out of a story because he couldn't understand it.

I usually spent more time in the woods in January and February than I did during the season. That's when you move stands and take a chainsaw and clear shooting lanes.

Some years ago, the late Russel Jackson and I were doing some scouting on 1,000 acres I had leased in Hickam County. Russ was carrying his rifle cause we had lots of coyotes. I was just carrying my camera and a notebook. (SCN is going to like this)

Game warden met us at the gate. Now keep in mind, deer season is closed. Russ is not wearing orange and neither am I. Maybe I should mention, Russ is 6-8 about 300 pounds and had been in a bad mood for 10 years.

So the officer says he wants to see our hunting licenses. Well I don't have mine but Russ produces his. So we go through the whole process and Russ is getting hotter by the minute. Finally he says, "Look you little Barney Fife pr---, all we are doing is post season scouting and the rifle is for coyotes."

Officer says, you are doing what. Cracked both of us up. I don't think that you man lasted very long with TWRA.

I'll admit fescue wont bring them running but.. for the last 8 years it has been good enough to keep them on my farm.. at least keep the hunting enjoyable.. not that I dont enjoy watching woodpeckers and squirrels and breathing fresh air.. I guess I may have a isolated incident but like I said. next year there will be corn out.. whether grown or poured(if legal)..
