Don't ask me about bow-hunting! I couldn't kill a deer with an arrow even if it was tipped with a heat-seaking nuclear bomb.

There are only about three things I can tell you. First deer have to eat. identify the food source. Second somehow they have to get to the food source. Figure out how they are doing it. Third concentrate your hunting on midday, 10-2.
Except for at night, the only deer I am seeing around here are about noon.
Oh one other thing. BSK wasn't kidding
Oh, one other thing, many hunters don't realize but in many cases, deer and squirrels eat the same thing. Watch the squirrels. If they are feeding on hickory or walnuts forget it. Otherwise pay attention to where they are feeding.
One more. This time of year we tend to have really cold, frosty mornings. This far south, deer don't nuch like frost. But they tend to move just as the frost starts to burn off-about an hour after sunup. Good time to be in the woods.
After that, it is mostly luck with a bow.

I agree with bowriter except for one thing. After hunting for over 25 years, last year we discovered ther is a "preferred" hickory nut deer like. I believe it is a Pignut Hickory. It has a relatively soft shell, and has about the same size and shape of a pecan.
BTW, I have never met BSK, but man is he ADAMENT about his bowhunting skills.
And "good" luck is where opportunity and preparation meet. I suggest you put on ALL your cold hunting clothes and shoot your bow. I rarely get by this test without having to move my pins a little.

I suck at late season hunting. The best advise I could give you is look for trails being used heavely. As the food sources dewindle the deer hit whatevers left hard and in big numbers.
Good Luck and welcome to the site.

True story. During just my second season of bow hunting I tallied my 40th clean miss at a deer. I quit counting after that, but I guarantee you that before I gave up bow-hunting for good I racked up at least 100 clean misses.

Now those woods n rhea co are tough for me because i have nn idea what am doing.Do you hunt much n rhea? How was your season?

Its where I cut my teeth and the only place I hunted until around 15 years ago. Bowater stopped selling permits and went to leasing land by the acre. I have been on a few leases through the years since but never happy with them for numerous reasons.

Im suprised as much as you know about mature bucks they dont just give up as soon as you enter the woods. LOL 40 misses in 1 season, funny.

one thing you really need to be aware of when late season bow hunting is how open the woods are. it is really hard to get a deer within bow range this time of year. Try to get a little higher in the tree than you normally do and if possible try to find a tree with as much cover around it as possible. cedar trees make great cover this time of year.

I can drill a target with a bow all day long. Just not a living deer.

The problem is all mental. With a bow in my hands I KNOW I'm going to miss, so I do. Yet with a firearm, I have total confidence in my shooting ability. With an MZ or rifle in my hands, I KNOW I will kill anything I shoot at, so I do.
Strange...

BSK its not strange. Hunting is very mental. It doesnt matter what you shoot as long as you have confidence. I saw this happen to a good friend of mine. He was a He*l of shot with any gun,but he missed one day with his rifle and for the rest of the season it was all mentally over for him. He missed 5 deer before season was over. Over the summer he got the old rifle out and practice on paper targets. Next season he had his confidence back and it worked. He was 60 yrs young at the time and killed a ton of deer, but take alway someones confidence and they will start missing those living target. It great to see your are honest. Thanks for all the great and honest storys you share with us.
