Rut is not over until the last hot doe gets bred. Been seeing lots of fresh rubs and freshin up scrapes around here. Still waitin on a buck. Same here, also in Mcminn. Lots of new rubs found when I went scouting on my ridge on the Athens city limits this week. I killed a nice 8 point on Saturday and he had all the signs of a rutting buck. What ridge you huntin. I live just east of town, up above Mckinneys old escavating yard.

had a little 4 point come in this morning, pee in a scrape, feed for about 45 minutes, go back to the scrape and pee again, then go make a new rub. then he just walked off. i was thinking he must have A.D.D or something cause he acted like he couldnt concentrate on what he wanted to do. it was amusing.

had a buddy taking his christmas lights down this week and had a 8pt come chasing a doe through the woods behind his house. This was just south of Johnson City near the Washington/Carter Co line.

gator-n-buck,
I feel your pain.... late season is very tough. We are not seeing the bucks like we want either but going to hang in there. Every year we seem to pull one out late season. We saw 26 does yesterday and not one buck...Going to try another location today. Good Luck...

Hang tuff guys, the hunting is definitely tuffer, but they are still out there. I too am concentrating my efforts on super thick areas close to a good food source now. These old bucks are resting and gorging themselves to get caught back up from the Rut, as well as breeding the late does as they trickle in!

Mountain bucks are, in my opinion, the hardest to pattern and kill. East Tennessee is full of cover and lacks agricultural fields. The wind swirls all the time in the mountains, especially in the deep valleys.
The good news is there is an artic cold front moving in this weekend. This should allow for more movement by the deer. With this cold front in mind, hunting on South facing slopes could pay off for you. This is especially true if there is abundant cover full of natural browse.
I like hunting as high as I can in a tree overlooking big, overgrown valleys that funnel deer. The valley needs to be full of green briars and honeysuckle. Here's my definition of a valley full of green briar: if you were to sprint through, you would be down to your knickers and bleeding by the time you reached the other side. The thicker the better. These make excellent stands for an all day hunt.
The second rut can be a great time to hunt. The number of does in estrous are much lower now than during the primary rut. This can lead to more bucks running around with their nose to the ground. However, the difficult part is finding the area that contains that estrous doe.
Another important strategy you might want to implement is to vary your hunting times. By now, most mature bucks know that there are hunters in the woods carrying guns. They also know that hunters leave their stand around 10:30 in the morning. My advice would be to sit until 2 or 3 in the afternoon before going to an evening stand. Most bucks will be bedded at first light, so hunting the second shift(say 8:30-2:30)could also pay off for you.
As the saying goes, find the food and the deer won't be far is especially true in the late season. Find that thick browse and hunt high.
