Who else has heard of or seen some monster bucks killed in Tn. this season, that weren't "avertised"? By this I mean put on the internet, in the news paper, or paraded around town. I know of several, right here in Maury County.
I often wonder how many more great bucks that are killed leagally in Tennessee's other 94 counties, that are not "advertised". As I have posted before, most data collected is # of points and what part of the county the buck was killed.
(p.s. sorry about my spelling and typing...not one of my strong points)

I try to get several of my friends in TN to post here. Some of them are not into the internet yet.

I have gotten reports on a ton of them. I have been able to verify a few. I know of a 198-gross non-typical in a taxidermy shop right now.

bowriter, Do you think Tennessee is underrated as far as good bucks go? I know we don't have the "book" bucks that other states might have, but from my observations, we are gaining ground.
What do you think the future holds for Tennessee, for more huge bucks being killed?

TN is underated in many ways. Do you have any idea how many hunters would love to have the liberal doe limits we have in Unit L?
As for big bucks, no I don't think it is that underated other than by resident hunters. We have far more big bucks here than most residents think. The major problem is the terrain and varied food sources. The bucks are here, but it takes more skill than just sitting on a food plot or corn field to kill one.
What I am starting to see is more hunters killing big bucks and not telling anybody. Our hunting, as far as big bucks, speaking of antlers will continue to improve. We will have years, such as this one, where they are killing monsters everywhere, and we will have some slow years. Just like any other state. But we will never have bucks in the size and numbers of some of the Midwest or northen states. It is biologically and ecolocially impossible. But we will have some tremendous bucks for TN.
It has, in my opinion, nothing to do with three or two or one buck limit. It is all centered around hunter awareness. More and more hunters are passing up young bucks. Personally I could care less. But it is a growing trend and that is helping. But in my opinion, the major factor is hunters are beginning to understand some of the basics of deer management. Much of that is due to sites such as this one.
Huge bucks in the future? Maybe a few. Better bucks certainly. Can we compete with KY in terms of antler size? Never.

Good post BW,
I'm in Wisconsin right now. Went to an achery shop that has 40ish mounts or so. We can't compete with these guys but I seen several that I told my son that in TN it is possible to kill some of them. TN is a great state to deer hunt.

I know there a re a bunch of big deer that dont get advertised and I would imagine most of those are the ones that are poached or shot over corn.
I have been lucky enough to hunt and harvest bucks in a couple other states, but I am content hunting the bucks we have in TN. I think its a great place to hunt. Things are definitely getting better!

I completely agree with what Bowriter posted. TN will continue to improve as a state for "good" bucks. Not recordbook bucks but still very good bucks. As more and more hunters pass up young bucks and focus their harvest efforts on older bucks we will see more and more 150 and 160-class gross bucks being killed. Those caliber bucks will be harvested by the hundreds each year. But I think the 170 and 180-class gross bucks will always remain a rarity. The areas of the state that produce such bucks with regularity are just too limited in scope. I literally cannot keep count of the number of 150 and 160-class bucks I've been sent pictures of or I've photographed myself, but the 170+ bucks are still extremely rare.

Yes, I know of at least one 160-170 class buck that has not made the "net" sites yet. It was killed with a bow on Oct. 13th in Hamilton County

I have scored a 154 8 point, 170 10 point, and dozens of 155-167 inch bucks over the last 2 years off the same property that no one will ever see pics of. Also scored a 173 inch and A 164 off an Iowa property. The 170 10 point was killed in tn with a bow this season

It's amazing though, even when not posted on a internet site how quickly, and how far away, word spreads when one of these giants are killed(160 and up) heck, just checking in a deer like that creates such a scene...it's just about impossible to keep anything a secret these days.

I remember when a 2 1/2 year-old 8-point created a scene at the check station. Now it takes 150+ to raise eyebrows.
How things have changed...

Some nice bucks that may not ever make it to the "public" even though they are on the internet are some of the deer taken off the Milan Arsenal. Man, I love looking at some of them deer. I would put them against any quota hunt in the state..some VERY nice bucks that you just dont hear about alot. check it out. Its on the TWRA website.

BSK, I am old enough to remember when a 1.5 fork horn "created a scene". In 1967 in Lewis County, when I made my deer hunting debut, I saw 2 does that morning. I "created a scene".......all by myself. I almost done it in my pants, when I saw those does.

I wish y'all could see what is in my yard at this very minute. The entire yard is full of deer and there are two bucks, off by themselves that most TN hunter would give a left danglie to shoot. I counted 23 deer total. I have no idea what is in my yard that attracts them. And yes, I could pop either one of them out the door with the crossbow.
One of them is...at least to me, I think he may be 10-12 point and in the 160 range. The other, I know is a 10 point in the 150 range. There are two other bucks out there with small basket racks. The rest are does and buttons. I wish had BGG's infared thingie.
Just seconds ago, they crossed the street to the neighbor's yard and set off his security light. They didn't even blink.

Gonna campout at bowriter's house! Now that Tennessee hunters can check their deer out on their computer, it will be easier for someone to "hide" those big bucks that cause a scene at the checkin stores. Also, the big ones killed by poachers at night never make the internet sites. Unless they decide to check the deer in the next day.

bowriter, The two big ones "off by themselves". What does that mean, as far as the rut goes? I guess neighbor hood bucks have different patterns than wild/hunted bucks. I know these deer are "wild", but does it make a difference when they are not hunted.
I assume they are not hunted by humans. I guess in the instictive mind of a deer, they know they are "hunted" to some extent.

So if there's quite afew nice bucks being taken now in Maury County, does that go to say that Yanahli is an overlooked WMA?
I know it holds one of the highest kill numbers for mid tn WMAs this season. Thats also due to the size though I guess.

Our rut peaked several weeks ago. That doesn't mean there won't be some unbred does come ino heat again. I doubt all the does have been bred. But deer who live in backyards are not the same deer as the ones who live in big woods.
I have only seen one of these bucks in daylight. But just because they are bucks-big bucks, does not mean they can't associate. The only time there is a problem is when they encounter a hot doe at the same time. Surely there has been a study done on this, somewhere. Maybe Auburn? I have been aware of it for years, just never gave it much thought.
When I put the backyard buck seminar together, I never even consider this aspect. To me, it was just natural. One of the aspects of the seminat was just how many big bucks lived right in people's backyards and they never saw them. No scrapes, no rubs, no doe chasing.
Oh, btw-these deer are hunted, just not in the backyards. They cross the road, they go into enemy territory.

Winchester- you'd be amazed at the bucks killed that exceed 160 that you never hear about...and I'm talking here in TN. I made the statement on a post a few days ago, that if killed a World Record, noone would ever know about it.
I meant it. I no longer need the money and I sure as he11 don't need the headaches.
