Just found out rsimms was sworn in as a captain I think on the 6th of December. Congrats to him.

It's true, sort of. They kind of do process backwards. The "Swearing In" actually comes before the formal application process. I just passed the official 3.5-hour exam tonight.

Now all I have to do is:
-- Get my Homeland Security ID Card (called a TWIC)
-- Pass a drug test
-- Get fingerprinted
-- Get through a criminal background check
-- Learn CPR (again... had certification once that expired)
-- Pass official USCG physical (done)
-- Clearly document a minimum of 360 days operating boat (freshwater and salt)
-- Get three character references (not family)
-- Get papers notarized
-- Then actually fill out the USCG application and send it in with $150 (above several hundred already paid for the course)

THEN maybe I'll actually be a real USCG Captain. \:\)

But thanks very much for the kind words and moral support.

I should also add that I took the course/test through an outfit called True Course. http://www.truecourses.com/ Capt. Dick Devoe really did do an excellent job, and in spite of my laundry list of USCG bureauratic requirements, True Course does an excellent job holding your hand and walking you through the process. It ain't cheap, but I believe it was worth it.

Dam, he is finally legal. BTW- That exam is a sumbuck. I flunked it. R- do they still have the celestial navigation part? I couldn't tell Mars from a street light. I was working out of Venice, LA at the time and thought I needed to be legal. About two hours into the exam, I just threw up my hands and said screw it.

I didn't have to do "Celestial Navigation," but LOTS of chart plotting, conversion of compass north to True North, calculating "set & drift" and all that stuff. That was actually easiest part. Hardest part was "Navigation Rules of the Road" where you must score a minimum 90%. Ugh!

All that thinking stuff was too much for me. I didn't want to run a shrimp boat anyway. Red on the right returning was about all I could handle.

Rich-You'll appreciate this. I have a friend who is a pilot...as in commercial airlines. She failed the test twice. She bought a boat down near Gulf Shores and had to hire a guy to bring it up the river for her.

Remember when we had no GPS and had to read a compass? We had a fathometer and a gauge for oil pressure and rpm's.
