New to the site, but not new to forums in general. Good looking site you guys have here.

This is my first winter with my boat and I've never winterized one before. Need a little help if anyone knows. I put the Sta-Bil treatment in my gas tank and ran the motor for 5 minutes, then pulled the gas line and let the motor burn all the gas in it and choke down. This is a 120 horse outboard. What else do I need to do to winterize it?

First does the gas have enthnol in it, If it does, you should use Sta-Bil thats made for enthnol, not regular Sta-Bil, there arguement about running your carb dry or leaving them full, I owned boats for 40 years and never run my carbs dry. (most dealer agree)If you have a built in fuel tank top off the tank. clean the fuel filter, I would option to buy a external water seperator/filter, the gas you buy, you don't what you getting Buy some engine fogger, fog the carb with the engine running and warm.(intructions are on the can) Then remove the spark plugs and fog the cylinders. replace the plugs. I put high temp No- Seize on the plug threads, it don't take much,You don't have to worry about you plugs seizing in the head, I would replace the lower oil even if looks good, drain in a clear glass jar looking for gray looking oil, grease all your fitting and spray lube you control cable, don't store your engine tilted , but staight down specialy you store the boat outside. Hope this will help

I only use pure gas. I used the sta-bil for ethanol fuels though. Does that matter?

You say don't store engine tilted. I have it on the transom support. Are you saying remove the transom support and just let
it hang?

I plan on fishing some in december, and probably late february, I will start using it again, so it wont be stored that long. Do I have to do all this again after using it in december? Just wanna make sure nothing freezes in the motor. It will be stored outside.

No, Its Sta-bil with another additive to keep the alcohol from separating from the gas. Yes, unless its stored inside water collects in the exhaust from rain and condensation when its Stored tilted, changes in the weather will cause condensation build up Why take a chance on replacing a lower unit casing. My boats are under a carport but subject to freezing, when I get home I take the engine support loose and lower the engine.( most of the time a little water will run out ) While I'm thinking make sure your livewells and anything else that holds water is empty. I also pull the transom plug in case the cover gets damage and lets water in. Keep your batteries fully charge.

Hope I haven't confused you, Have fun, catch a big one!

i thought winterizing was for up north wher the lakes freeze over and u got no choice to store the boat over the winter.
if your goin to use it once a month, just stay away from ethanol fuels and keep batteries charged

Winterizing is for anywhere, Its been 17 below in Tennessee,in the southern coastal states they call moth balling. Far as buying non-ethanol fuel, unless you test the fuel you don't know! Case in point my friend who buys only non-ethanol 89 oc gas came by the house , I just purchase a test kit,the fuel showed 5% ethanol. True if use the boat regularly you have to do the fogging, but the rest is just yearly routine maintenance

The best way to winterize an outboard is, put it on a duck boat and use it.
