Caught a few of these last couple times i was fishing. Didn't know what they were but looked them up.
I can drop a worm right off of a dock on the cumberland river and usually catch a decent sized 6+ lb one every time i'm there.

Anyone else ever catch them?

I catch a bunch of them fly fishing during the Fly South Carp Tournament. Gil does too - though his are frequently bigger. I need to spy on him and figure out where he's fishing.

They are weird - sometimes they fight like a freight train and sometimes they come in like a dead weight.

I've heard they are really good eating (though bony) but I've never tried one.

I've noticed that also.. heck, i thought a few of them wanted to be caught they were so easy to reel in...

Where I catch them I wouldn't eat anything lol... Although we did trade a couple days worth of catches to an elderly couple as kids. First time i'd ever heard of anyone eating Drum.

Ditto on what BD said. The are sometimes horrible fighters, sometimes a ton of fun. I've killed a couple to see if I could figure out what they eat. Their stomachs were filled with nothing but mud and algae, although we know that that they eat all kinds of live critters.

They seem to fight better in smaller rivers like the Buffalo, Harpeth, and the Caney Fork. Maybe it's because there's more current that makes them stronger. Maybe it's just because you have to fight current to get them in. This is also true of gar, which are horrible fighters most of the time but fight like bulldogs for one good run in the Buffalo and other swift rivers.

BD - I will go to Google Earth and put a "pin" in every place I fish for carp just for you. As you know, I even have handouts that show some of my honey-holes that I give to folks when I do carp presentations. I'm an open book. When I went to where you fished for carp, I couldn't catch a single one and got busted every time. If you went where I go, I suspect you would catch twice as much as I do.

I love the below pic. There's blood on the fish from it flopping around in my boat as if we did battle. My facial expression and the fact that I'm holding the fish out toward the camera give the impression that it's friggin' Shamu! \:D

I think you'd probably outfish me on the river. Most of the places I fish are "small water" where I can get a fly on the fish's nose with a pretty short cast. If you show me a big fish cruising along and tell me to put a fly in front of it, I'll blow a long cast every time. I just can't handle the excitement.
