My son just called me from school in northern Michigan and told me the talk around campus is that a new world record brown trout was caught in the Big Manistee River. He said it was 43.5lbs and that a river guide put one of his clients on it...I got online and found the story in the Ludington News but have not been able to find a picture..

I heard earlier today that it is a "for sure" Michigan state record and although not verified a new world record by almost 6lbs...

Yep, rumors were certainly flying for a while there...old record 40lbs 40z caught in Arkansas' Little Red River. New record gear....30-pound-test Power Pro line, Cabela’s 9-foot medium heavy XML rod, Prodigy reel, crankbait

I have an issue with the Dieferbaker trout being legitimate records. Amazing fish? GOD yes...some kind of record? Oh yeah...but they're triploid. They escaped from a hatchery on the lake some years ago, and took to the waters. They're effectively not the same fish as a regular rainbow or steelhead, as evidenced by the ridiculous build on them. Fantastic fish nevertheless, but honestly...I don't know if they should be put in the same category.

I wouldn't mind if a few of those Dieferbakers were being dumped into the Holston or Watauaga River. Maybe some triploid browns to go with them.

I agree. Triploids are engineered to be big because they don't expend energy on reproduction like a natural fish. Not legit.

A clarification is in order for those who didn't read the links though. Tubs is talking about the new record rainbow trout mentioned in one of the follow-up posts. The new record brown is not a triploid and is a legitimate record.

Incidentally, is it just me, or is the dude who caught the Diefenbaker rainbow kind of creepy looking?

Sigmund might disagree.

BD,

They look like they are from that region between middle tennessee and the plateau....I agree very creepy.

I think I would rather fish Jurassic lake. But nobody weighs those pure strain rainbows....

Quote from the Article:

 Quote:
Technically known as triploids, they’re designed with three sets of chromosomes, making them sterile and channeling energies normally spent reproducing towards growth.

See? That's exactly why the record is unfair. If I hadn't channeled all my energy toward attempting to "reproduce" when I was in college, I'd weigh 600 pounds right now.

Meh - from an online article about Jurassic:

 Quote:
Outside of their individual spawning cycle they roam the lake, which is absolutely crystal clear, gorging on a type of freshwater krill and growing fat to an extent that you have to see to imagine.

Is the fishing easy…..the answer is absurdly so. Do you have to be a proficient and skilled angler……simply the answer is a no.

Why spend all that money traveling to Patagonia if all you want is an "absurdly easy" shot at a big fat rainbow? They've got pellet fed pig streams in North Georgia for that. \:\)

For my money, the best experience I've had fishing for giant trophy rainbows in the double-digit class has been on the mysis shrimp tailwaters out West. Those fish are big, but they're also incredibly educated and it's tough, techinical fishing.

a fly fisherman... pardon me, an "angler"... would say neither was a legitimate record because they weren't caught on flies.

then the next one would say it would have to be caught with a dry fly to be really sporting.

and the next would say it had to be a fly the angler tied himself.

and the one after him would say it doesn't count unless you fish the fly upstream.

Another would claim it had to be done with a bamboo rod.

and so on, and so forth, until someone reached the theoretical limit of the fly angler's attitude and vanished in a flash of pure white light.

I sure don't... tried fly fishing awhile back and didn't care for it, too much fiddling around.

even took a class at an outdoor store in Nashville - about a dozen of us went to Centennial Park on a Vandy game day and the place was full of tailgating Georgia fans. One of them asked what we were doing as we left & I told her we were going alley fishing for stray cats with little meatballs for bait.

She believed every bit of it, looked horrified & said "that's AWFUL!"

another one... I used to be in a fishing club of about twenty who came from various parts of the country and met on the White River in Arkansas every summer for some trout fishing. The Nashville members would fly to Kansas City, connect with some more of the group there, and drive down, right past the original Bass Pro in Columbia, Missouri.

We told one of the KC guys that the browns on the White just loved big spinner baits, and he bought enough to half-fill a paper grocery bag and was handing them out at camp, talking about how great they'd work.

maybe they will, I don't know - couldn't prove it by us, though.

I want to fish for the Jurassic lake fish because they fight like tuna and jump like tarpon. Find some of the video on the web. That is what gets my blood boiling. Like what I have heard about Thompson and Dean river steelhead. Why I have fallen so hard for Atlantic Salmon. They fight like mad and have athletic prowess.

I don't care about records. I like spirit. It is the main reason I don't enjoy the browns on the Caney but love the rainbows. Those bows have spirit. That 35+ inch fish I hooked "a few years ago" cleared the water twice in the first 2 minutes of the fight. Truely awesome. I would regularly have 18-20 inch fish clear the water 5-7 times during the fight. That is why I chase them, they have talent.

Find some video of them and the searuns in Tierra del Feugo. Both strains jump like tarpon.......goood stuff. I will chase grander Marlin someday just to see what they have got for the same reason. I don't need to hang a fish from a hook at the dock.

I like Tn Deer hunting better...My dad comes here from Roscommon to hunt and he has a nice chunk of land up there,....but the fishing ...be it salmon , steelhead, perch fishing walleye, bass......and pike thru the ice.....it cannot be beat. I miss watching that flag fly up and running accross the ice, and slaughtering the gills with waxworms.

I get a kick out of the looks I get at work from the Bama boys when I mention ice fishing . You southern folks don't know what you are missing . I actually enjoy ice fishing (in my portable shanty) more than open water fishing.

Yep, Stik, it's a social event...you walk around and visit other fishermen...drink a few beers, catch some fish, tell some lies...and........most of all...........no snakes! lol

Been to Roscommon plenty of times...or through there..no deer up there now, they're all in southern Michigan. I fished Whampler's Lake in Michigan's Irish Hills yesterday in a bass tournament...It was a good day on the lake, temps in the 70's after warming up from 38 when I first got out there...

Nice Pics, I miss that Michigan Salmon fishing, but i make it up there usually at least once in the spring, my Brother is a steelhead nut and he keeps them pinned down all spring so its kinda like having a guide.

Headed back home to Traverse City for Xmas in a few weeks, but probably won't have time to fish with all the skiing to be done.
Miss the fish but they sure don't miss me. Sold the boat when I came down here. Kept the downrigger rods and everything else though, just can't bring myself to get rid of them. Will need to get some of the salmon/brown trout/steelhead pictures loaded to the computer for future posting.

That brown is a brute though, think my best was 18 lbs. on a blue/silver spoon.

I drive by Lake Leann a couple of times a month..out near Somerset, MI. There are quite a few lakes in the area...
