I went gar fishing Monday with my friend Randy Holder.

In the last few years Randy has become a serious fly fisherman, and with a few special "gar flies" provided by my friend Troy Basso, I felt sure we could have some fun.

We did (of course the trip include some "Bonus Blues'").

Simms-You ever tried eating one of those gar. They are pretty good if you know how to do it.

And...why do all the fly-flingers have to eat their rods?

Gil- That's good. Why not write a column around that?

"The Story of Testiclese-Just one nut in History."

The term, "By Gar" so often used by literary pirates, was first coined by a famous Greek, Monorchid Testiclese. It seems he was anchored in the bay at Padre Island and had gone gar fishing. Lacking suitable gear, he unbuttoned his fly...fishing case and withdrew his whippy rod. Shaking the drops of ...dew from the end, he quickly ran it through some of his guides. Most of them protested and proceeded to run about the deck crying "Oh my Oh my."

You take it from there.

Fly flingers are notorious for "respecting the fish" they catch (and their nuts).

Ergo, careful respect, handling and release of any kind of fish (trout or gar) requires both hands. Plus I figure if it's a cool enough pose for gil1, it's cool enough for anybody.

If it were left to me, I would brain the gar across the skull with a ball bat and display their bloody carcasses splayed out in the mud. Come to think of it... I'd do the same thing with trout.

(And I pray that a suitable amount of sarcasm exudes itself from this post for everyone to know I speak in complete jest... at least in regard to one of the aforementioned species).

As for eating gar.... yes, I tried one once.

It tasted like .... well, a gar. ;\)

That's an idea that I've been pondering for some time...I'd love to see an uninterupted thread of an "add a line" from our resident blowhards.Of course you'd need to sign away the rights so we could amaze our friends by knowing such "challenged" characters. ;\)
BTW, Rsimms, cool pics. Do you you the same hand to pee that you use on that cork handle....as a matter of fact,it isn't a loaner,is it?
