Hanging out on more hunting and trapping related web sites than I frankly have time for I can unequivocally say, (that is "honestly say" for you linguistically challenged) that this forum is the absolute best in getting great answers to questions. There is a tremendous talent pool among this group!!
I have a question, maybe several here so let me begin by saying my future Arabian horse pastures (it's okay, you boys with 'walkers" are welcome to chime in too) are now a standing corn field. When the corn comes down this fall, say late October, early November in Cumberland County I will have to decide to A) leave the standing corn stalks up or disk them down to prevent winter/rain erosion which has been a problem previous B) till the corn stalks under and get some cover planted that hopefully will get a root base (if possible given the cold weather) before the rains may get bad enough to send tons of topsoil down on my neighbor or C) some combination of the two. What would you do?
What mix of grasses would you suggest for the horse pastures? Would I be dollars ahead to just wait until spring to do the lime application and grass seeding? Thanks in advance for any and all constructive commentary here. It's greatly appreciated.

my girlfriend and i consulted the a U.T. extension agent about the best thing to plant for horse pasture and he said you cant beat fescue 131. good amount of protein and very hardy. we do lime every other year in the fall and fertilizer in spring.

I'm not a farmer, so probably don't know nothin', but I grew up in farming country and my dad was a farmer before I was born.
Every fall he'd disk under the corn and plant it with Rye. (Not Rye Grass, but Rye.) The deer loved the fresh shoots.
I'd disk the corn in late Sept/early October, plant rye or other fall deer forage, and then when deer season is over disk under the rye and plant my pasture grass then.

rye would be a good choice for the winter for erosion control but come early spring i would turn it and prepare a good seed bed and go with the fescue.

The Williamson & Eagleville Co-ops both sell a blended product specifically for horse pastures. I have sown it in the past with good success although you may find it cheaper to blend your own. Clover is great for fixing nitrogen into the soil but to much will make your horse drool & slobber. I would ask the Co-op's advice on how late you can plant.

if i were to plant fescue , i would do so in the fall so it will have a better root system in place when the summer heat rolls around .

Do not use clover in the pasture, it is good on the pasture but not on the horses. Also use horses pasture seed not all fescue grasses are good for mares and colts and can cause no milk and or birthing problems.

Turner can tell you where you can buy it at close to you but Farm Center in Chapel Hill Tn 931 364 7220 was 55 cent a pound cheaper on 300# of some Turner lawn turf seed than anyone else the other day went I got it.
