Went today with the goal of catching a 30lber from my kayak. I have been catch fish between 20-25lbs. I get to the river and try to catch some bait, but struggled and only caught one bait. So I was like well I am just going to start fishing. So I paddle down to my spot and put out a balloon and as soon as it got to my honeyhole he drilled it. The fight was on. The fish dragged me a good 150-200 yards before I could get him boat side and even then he was still green. I got him in the boat and estimated him at 30lbs. Biggest yet in my kayak.

Canonman, you need some boga grips. Will save you from getting a hook in yourself and you can weigh your fish accurately. Just for comparison, here is one that just bottomed out my 30 lb boga grips, 36" long, and weighed just over 30 lbs.

Only problem with the boga grip is the scale stops at 30 pounds. They have a model that goes to 60, but it's twice as expensive. A scale that goes to 30 isn't any good for stripers - that's just where it starts to get interesting. \:\)

Nice one! I fish boone occasionally with my kayak. Its fun getting towed around by a striper. I have some video footage of it somewhere. Here's one I caught in February on Boone.

Brian, I agree, but for just the fact of saving yourself from getting a hook in your hand, the 30 lb boga's do just fine. My largest was just over 38 lbs, weighed on a set of digitals, and the 30 lbs boga's held him just fine. Fishing nothing but topwater as I do (all my lures have 4X strong gamakatsu treble hooks) it is no fun unhooking them without the boga's to help.
I try to put the stripers close to the boat as fast as possible and get them off to release. Yes I kill some fish, but release over 90 percent of the fish I catch. I normally fish by myself, so most of my pictures are of the ones I keep.

I take a measurement and use this chart..
http://www.stripers247.com/striped-bass-length-to-weight-chart.php
It will get you close.

Holston, I would not trust that chart for Cumberland river stripers, especially FAT ones, not even close. The striper pictured was 36" on the nose and was just over 30 lbs. The chart says 22 lbs max. I have caught many more that were blown up like balloons with bait they had eaten and that chart is not even close.
