i have been noticing earlier this month the leaves on trees are falling off and the larger browns on the caney already have fall colors....wonder if this is indicator of a bad winter ahead of us. last winter wasnt bad, but felt long.
this pic was taken in january earlier this year at happy, not a soul on the whole river. we were sittin on sheet of ice.

If we have a bad winter, it will be the first in many, many years!!!! We have very little snow anymore, and the cold fronts last days instead of weeks.

I hope it is long and cold. I've been wanting to try tracking deer in snow for many years but haven't been able to because we haven't had much snow during deer season in mid. TN. The winters have been awfully warm lately.

While it would help the duck hunting a lot, there is a nice ripe El Nino going on in the Pacific. This generally means warmer winter weather north of us and stormy weather here. So rain and wind? The heating bill may be nice on the other hand.

As to fishing, if you like tuna fishing head to Mexico as they should be on fire with the el nino pushing the big boys north.

A strong Nino would mean a very high likelihood of warm and wet. However, there are some signs that this may only be a weak Nino thru the winter months. Weak Ninos can be great if you like cold and snow. I've also heard some talk from the weather folks about the lack of solar activity recently. We'll see how it all plays out. I'm going to cut a little extra wood just in case.

yep, that is true. i remember around ten years ago we went out on a charter boat from long beach to catalina and to san clemente islands, caught lots of blue fins and yellowtails. its funny youll see school of yellow tails under a pile of trash floatin in middle of nowhere.
but i think this winter could be bad, just be ready for anything!

I heard that! I haven't seen a good snow forever! It seemed like it snowed at least a little bit every year when I was a kid. Way back in the 80's & 90's....LOL

I remember back when I was a kid, we'd always be worried that school would have to run an extra week or two in the summer because we were constantly running out of snow days.

Now, for the last several years, I've noticed local schools taking snow days when they really don't need to, just because they've got so many extra left over at the end of the winter.

Yup, it's been several years since we've had a good cold winter with lots of snow. I tend to agree with Stillinscrubs that we're more likely to have a mild, wet one this year due to the El Nino though.

I stopped trusting "old timer signs" many moons ago when I realized that every time I asked an old timer about the upcoming winter, they ALWAYS predict a bad one.

Ive seen deer like in the photo!!! Last year was the first year for me out of Northern VT. The cold is different without snow. There is no shortage up there. 285in. of snowfall Jan 1st the last year i was there!lasted till May!Over 4 ft on the ground most of the time!
As for signs.. you are all right...the bees are the best for snow not just cold!

A fun website to follow for Pacific water temps. I don't plan a tuna trip without watching this one for awhile.

You folks can have the snow, I simply don't like it anymore. As far as tracking deer in the snow; where I hunt in the mountains, they simple bed down and wait for warmer temps. I have never seen deer after a snow.

check the persimmions, see if they have a fork or a spoon in them. if they have the fork it will be a bad winter.

Big group of Honkers flew overhead over the weekend heading south. Seems a little early. I'm putting in a wood stove this year. Bring it on!

The persimmons aren't ripe yet. Even I'm not crazy enough to want to eat a green persimmon.
