Rivergauges.com provides a real-time temperature gauge at the Stonewall Bridge. The river is getting warmer every day.

August 5 it peaked at 65.

August 6 it peaked at 67.

August 7 it peaked at 69.

August 8 (today) it peaked at 72.

Somewhere around 75 is lethal temperature for trout. We've got at least two months before the water on the lake side gets down below 75, so it doesn't look good.

Are we out of cold water and witnessing the last few days before the Caney trout fishery dies for the year?

That is scary... but interesting. Is this unusual or is it an annual occurence?

I appreciate the tip about Rivergauges.com That's a new one on me.

It usually does not get that warm. Last year I don't think the Stonewall gauge ever got above 58 degrees.

I am worried that the big rain in May and the other big one in July may have blown us through our cold water supply for the year. I sent an e-mail to the Corps asking what kind of deep-water temps they're seeing above the Dam, but I don't expect to hear back before late next week.

Rivergauges is one of the most useful sites around if you are a river and stream fisherman. They have flow information for a lot of streams you can't find anywhere else.

I was wondering about that. But... think about the fish migration downstream. Looking for big fish? Think downhill where there are more deep holes.

There might be some mortality, but they are adaptable and will move to survive. There might be a temp. of 75 in one place but there will be cooler water in different current sections. The lay of the river bottom has an effect on temp too. They will seek those spots. Expect them in deep holes and along rock bottoms lodged in between them.

I had a report yesterday of a 26 fish catch on Friday from a launch at the dam. I guess it isn't hurting them too much. But now is fine time to put in at Carthage and run upstream a ways.

I fished Sat. and Sunday morning's and caught lots of fish. The web page that I check the temp at StoneWall doesn't show the temp being out of the 60's. 69 is the highest and the temp for Aug 8th shows 65.66. Of course I don't know when the temp is taken. So it could have gotten warmer after this temp was posted.

This morning from 9 to 930 I caught 5 Brown's that were 16 inches. They seemed very healthy. Sat. my son and I caught about 40 fish. This morning I caught about 25 by myself.

Thats probably the temp before the generation hits and cools it down to 50 again.

Pretty good site...I just checked it and it says the water level dropped 599.60 feet in the last 24 hours. I wouldn't have known that if I hadn't checked.
