just wondering how twra regulates these crop damage deer kills.Seems odd to read about farmers killing 25 or more deer and leaving them laying. My question is who decides what is poaching and what is crop control?.I would be pretty upset to learn that my neighbor put down 30 deer over the summer because they were "eating his crops"I really am amazed that twra allows this to happen. If you plant crops you have to expect the wildlife to eat them.t seems like a lot of people could abuse this law.Does twra have to come and see the crop damage?

Yes. A visual inspection and follow-up is conducted by the wildlife officers. They do not issue depredation permits freely.

I'm not trying to get into a debate but I really would like to hear the law on it.Also does the farmer have to own the land and can he let others shoot the deer?Just seems like it might lead to a lot of poaching and wasted deer.iread where bgg said it is 90 degress and hard to process the deer.Bowhunters have to deal with that all the time but still manage to use the deer

Thanks.I think maybe we are making to much of this.If they have to inspect the area I would think they don't give as many permits as some have made ot out to be.

Thats what I think.I just hate to hear of people wasting all these deer in the name of crop control. They could make plans to give them to some people who could use them.

The actual law has been posted twice here recently, but I don't think that will answer your question completely. Prior to killing any big game animal that has damaged property, the landowner must have a permit from TWRA. As BGG stated an officer will inspect the damage, and confirm the species. Sometimes they do not issue a permit for lethal control; sometimes they do. The permit states who may shoot, under what conditions, and what may be done with the deer carcass. After the permit expires we get a report from the landowner.

If we want changes we need to orgainize and go to meetings with good suggestions. When it's been brought up before TnDeer menbers have offered to help dress deer for HFTH. The potential is also there to make $$$$$ selling special permits.
I've always wondered how many Big Bucks have been lost with these permits ???

I have to vote for the landowner who is suffering crop damage. Deer are animals. If he shoots them and leaves because he is told to, then that is fine. Once you pay for the land, the taxes, the equipment to plant and harvest crops and the time spent, along with who knows what costs I am forgetting or do not know about, then you can complain or not complain about crop damage.

I agree, if something is costing your personal business a lot of money loss, you will most definitely get rid of it, if at all possible. Same thing with the deer eating the crops, costs the Farmers a lot of money!! I hate to see any animal go to waste, but if there are enough to do crop damage and cause money lost, they need to be dealt with. Im glad to se that the Farmers are able to control this when the situation warrants it!
