Hello guys, I wanted to ask anyone who fishes/has fished at Old Hickory or Cheatham Dam what instruction you could give me. I have fished neither of these dams but would like to give one or both a try this week or next b/c JPP isnt generating. I would mainly like to catch some catfish and maybe striper if theyre bitting. Which side of the dam would you fish, how close to the boils, and anything a newcomer should know to be successful at these dams.

btw I will be fishing from the bank

Thanks alot yall

Best access is off of 249, Lock A road, Johnsons Creek follow the signs.

Cheatam best with 1 generator. Be there 45 minutes before sunrise. It can be over at sunrise. If the shad are there it is on. If not may as well go home.

There are 2 very diverse groups of fisherman. The locals who primarily fish topwaters throwing pencil poppers, etc. Looking for a fish to surface and casting to it. This is done mainly off the rock point, middle staircase.

Non locals who are fishing for food and keeping everything they can close to the dam. They are using shad on a 3 way rig fished on the bottom. They also will throw a large Rapala on the 3 way and get it to the bottom, seen a lot of fish caught this way.

You can also catch them on Storm plastics.

Leave the attitude at home. Lots of crossed lines, etc. This is combat fishing at its finest.
Thought I was gonna see a guy in a boat get shot a couple years ago. He was over the fish and wasnt gonna move until about 30 1 oz. Pencil Poppers started bouncing off his boat. He got the message pretty quick. Threatened to come a shore and settle it but he made a wise decision and left.

Dont know about Old Hickory or the catfish.

I was there Saturday and will be again this weekend. I got plenty of sinkers and a slingshot if the ground war on the bank breaks out.

I understand now. ;\)

I dont have a boat though so the bank is my only choice, guess I can deal with the crowds if I can catch some fish. Is it this bad at Old Hickory too?

It was somewhat crowded on the bank Saturday afternoon at least it looked that wary from the boat. There were some nice rockfish being pulled up the bluff, but those folks definatly operate as a team.(@ Cheatham)

Well ok then.
Is Cordell Hull or even center hill dam better?? Thats as far out as I can drive, and maybe I will if I dont make the "team" at Cheatham haha.

If Cheatham is close go there. There were lots of rockfish caught, but the bigger ones I saw were from the bank. We were catfishing and did well.

Its really not that bad.
The smell of the rotting shad the Laotians leave on the bank is far worse than the people. Most of the confrontations I have seen are between the boats and the boys on the bank. Most boats stay out of the way.

Did see a Laotian take a Pencil Popper in the side one time because he was trying to catch bait too close to the locals.
Go during the week and you will find it much easier.

It was tough fishing @ Cheatham Saturday morning. Generators wide open, water a was a little crowded, but the bank was full and they were catching some good rockfish. I like showing up @ 2 or 3PM. Most folks heading in when i'm getting started. Managed 10 cats but not the bigguns we hoped for. Kind of felt like Moses. We could see the promise land but couldn't enter in.

\:D \:D From another web site RE Cheatam Dam:

Saw one nice striper 8-10 lb caught from the bank, they were running the generator right next to the bank 6700 cfs. I'll bet the bigger fish where in the faster current, drifted it once but the bank fisherman where throwing leads all around me! Discreation was the better part of valor! \:D

I will be there tonight. For catfish we hit the flats above the dam at night and early mornings. For stripers at the mouth of the steam plant and below the dam about a mile is best for stripers IMO. Oh and cats in the current below old hick when the flats slow down. bump bottom below cheetam for some nice cats most days

and by the way below cheetam is much more argument accessable. People there take their fishing very seriously. Too serious IMO but to each their own
