It was caught at the Duck River Refuge. I don't know exactly what it is.

Bowfin- prehistoric. Right up there with the shark in terms of age. They have a very unique skeleton and fight like a sumbuck. The larger ones, you can hear grunting as they come for the lure.
Southern term is grinnel but also called dogfish or mudfish. Never knew anybody to eat one. They can get up to 10-15 pounds but I don't know how you'd land one that big.

Here's the website for Bowfin Angler's Group ("America's Toughest Sportfish for 100,000,000 Years").

It has everything you ever wanted to know about fishing for bowfin - even recipes.

http://www.bowfinanglers.com/

If you like fishing for rough fish, also be sure to visit the Bowfin Angler's Group's sister site, the Gar Anglers Sporting Society. http://www.garfishing.com/

That's right: G.A.S.S./B.A.G. Not makin' this up, folks.

I had to take a picture of it because I wasn't sure what kind of fish it was. It was caught by a guy at the Duck River Refuge this morning. He said he had eaten some before but he couldn't think of what it was called. He said it had a lot of bones in it but was otherwise good.

We shoot a ton of those things while bowfishing in North Carolina. My biggest is 10lbs 4ozs.
If you will lip one like a largemouth, you will have some permanent scars on your fingers to remember them by. There teeth make a gar look toothless.
One neat thing to do is hang them up and let the flies eat them down then bleach the jaws like you see them do with sharks. Makes a neat conservation piece.
