This is something I've always wanted to learn how to do. I have absolutely no idea as to what to use, where, and when. I had a friend of mine go to Caney a couple weeks ago and he said that he was catching them using trout on a float and that got me excited. BTW, are these fish good to eat? I know people catch them below Chic. Dam at some point in the year, I just don't know when and how to.

6"-8" rainbows are like candy to stripers. Yes they are legal, if bought from a store, you just have to have the reciept of where you bought them.

They are also legal if legally caught and you have no more than seven.

Or just use a flyrod:

This disappoints me......I thought I would at least get a comment from the "anti-flyrod" guys. All the jokes we have had to indure about catching small fish on flyrods.

Yes trout under a float.
A big cotton cordell redfin in the pattern of a rainbow trout work wonders also. The look like a huge jerkbait. 7" long or so.

Or big bucktails dressed with a curlytail grub.

Another good bait and method is a live shad fished under a balloon.

Live baiting shad in the boils of the dam and directly below. Bucktails with a grub. 3/4 to 1 ounce! When I live bait I use about 1/2 ounce of egg sinker and 16-24 inches of leader with 20-25lb test for the leader and reel. A good small but stout hook allows the bait to swim a little better. My favorite shad are threadfin but they are a lot harder to find than gizzards. I prefer smaller gizzards and will fish any size threadfin.
