Jugging for bass. There is a pond with nothin but bass and some crappie in it. We have caught some good bass out of there but I was thinkin tryin that for fun and maybe get to catch some really big ones if it works.

I don't think it's legal to jug fish for bass, unless there's some exception on private water that I don't know about.

Why would it be illegal? Its a private pond. Yeah they are to eat too.

Trotlines, Limblines And Jugs
Trotlines consist of a main line with drop lines
to which single hooks are attached. Drop lines
must not be closer than 24 inches. Nongame
fish, except paddlefish, may be taken without
limit; game fish, except catfish, may not be taken.
There is no limit on catfish, except only 1 fish
may exceed 34 inches.
Trotlines, limblines and jugs must be tagged
and/or marked with the owner’s name and
address. Trotlines attached to the bank must be
tagged on the line within five feet of the bank.
Other trotlines must be tagged within five feet of
either end, and floating trotlines must be marked
on floats. The holder of a sport fishing license
may use one or more trotlines not having a
combination of more than 100 hooks. Limblines
(including yo-yos) must be tagged above water
level and are allowed only one hook per line.
Sport anglers are limited to 25 limblines. Sport
anglers are limited to 50 jugs or blocks and each
with only one hook.
Trotlines, limblines and jugs must be run at least
once each day and are prohibited within 1,000
yards below any TVA or Corps of Engineers
dam.

Interesting, talks about trotlines but does not specifically address jugs

It is not clearly written at all.

I always assumed the part about "Nongame fish, except paddlefish, may be taken without limit; game fish, except catfish, may not be taken" was intended to apply to everything in the title, trotlines, limblines, and jugs.

You're right - because of the trotline definitions at the very start, it seems to suggest that the part about game fish refers only to trotlines. I doubt that's what they meant though.

It needs to be re-written.

Bob, depending on the size of the pond, explosives might be more economical than bleach. All that rain on July 4 has probably left everybody with lots of extra fireworks - here's a win-win solution!

Plus, this way, people aren't setting those fireworks off at 11:00 p.m. in my neighborhood and waking me up. \:\)

Edit: explosives have the added benefit of being effective against jet skis, whereas bleach just makes the jet skis look clean.

Made me think. I baited limb lines and jugs with small bluegill many times back in high school. I caught cats, turtles, water dogs (mud puppies), and even a few gar. Even though bass love to munch on helpless bluegills, I never caught a bass that way. Wonder why?

I have fished trotlines and limb lines and some jugs most of my life. Never caught a bass on one. But then I usually used Octagon soap for bait.

Did you ever catch a jet ski? If you made a trotline with low-vis monofilament and set it about 4 feet above the surface, it just might work.

Sure does. I've seen guys use yo-yo's for crappie all my life - are crappie NOT a gamefish????

http://itemlistings.ebay.com/sdcsrp?fl=2...tch&xm&siteid=0

Ive never caught a bass on a jug either - even when using live bait.

That's what I'd do as well. I've never heard of going after bass using jugs, but heck why not. Sounds like fun. Good luck!

You know, I was just thinking. I never caught a bass while jug fishing but I did catch two jugs while bass fishing. Unfortunately, I couldn't get her in the boat. Porter Waggoner had the same experience but I believe he did land her.

Like other things in the TWRA "Guides", the content often is a summary of the regulations and unfortunately that sometimes leaves some things out. That is why all of the "Guides" have a disclaimer that they are not legal documents. In this case the Fishing Guide is wrong. All species are legal and creel and size limits are the same as with rod and reel.

The problem has been documented and will be changed in the next Fishing Guide.

Thanks for making us aware of the problem!

Caught a nice 5# smallie on a limbline using bluegill, I never could understand how he didn't get off, he was barely hooked and had plenty of life in him when we ran the lines.
