So... to those that swear by magnesium and a spark...

I'm watching Bizzare Foods with Andrew Zimmerman the other day.

He is doing an episode on food but he has to survive in woods on his own for 2 days. By that he has to make a fire.

2 Days prior to his departure he has a training session with world renowned outdoorsman/survival man "Hawk" (not sure of full name, but seen him on a few shows).
They get a birds nest and scrape off magnesium onto it... then for the next 1.5 they try and light it... NO GO!

If they would have had a battery and steel wool there is not skill to it. Put the two together and bada bing bada boom... instant fire!

To those that say... what if the battery is dead? Well if you know anything about survival a fire is to never be put out as long as you are at that individual camp site. You keep it going 24-7. So you only need 1 little charge out of that battery. If you are going out in the woods, pack a fresh battery and you'll never have to worry about it.

I take the empty roll from toilet paper or paper towels, stuff them with the lint from my dryer, place under kindling and strike a match to it. In no time at all yo have a fire going. I must be cheap I don't have to buy a bettery. \:D

I make water proof matches by dipping them in Hot Wax.
I use cedar shavings for my Tender.
