On Monday afternoon My son Ronnie and I arrived at Piney campgrounds on Kentucky lake. My dad came a little later with the camper. I will tell you we had a blast and made some great memories. We caught tons of bass and 3 cats while bass fishing. We only tried cat fishing once and got ran off the lake by a storm. Dad slept in each morning while my son and I fished and then picked him up around 9:00am .

On monday we caught probably 25 bass and fished until just after dark. Dad had big bass at about 2.5lbs and Ronnie caught his 1st smallmouth. Most fish were caught on a texas rigged bubble gum worm. Tuesday and Wednesday were pretty much the same.

On Thursday morning I caught a smallie and a 5lb largemouth that evening we fished a spot about 3 miles away and had the bass going crazy on a top water bite as the sun went down so we continued to fish. We were counting bass separately and we could here the thunder in the distance and see lightning far off. Dad and I were having a fish off and my son was trying to top his best of 15 bass in 1 day. No one wanted to leave the biting fish but the storm was getting closer and the lake gets rough with any wind.

I had 24 fish and dad had 22 and Ronnie was at 13 when his line broke so I handed him my rod and took his to re rig. He needed 3 more fish to beat his record of 15 from the night before. I got a line back in the water and had my 25th bass on twice and lost it both times. I told them 1 more cast and we had to go but no one caught a fish on that cast so we started for camp.

We had a good stretch of shallow water with lots of wood we had to work our way out of and then we opened the boat up and gave it all she had trying to beat the storm. We hit the main lake and the storm was just behind us with each lightning strike you could see how bad it was but it was all behind us. Ronnie said it looks real bad back there and my dad told him just don't look that way because were not going that way.

We made it back to camp and got the boat tied up with 10 minutes to spare. We tossed out 2 anchors on one side of the bot to hold it out against the with wind and then tied the front off to a tree.

Twice during the week Ronnie went to the next campsite and helped 2 younger boys. They wanted to catch a bass but only had spinners and weren't getting any bites. So he took them each a bullet sinker, hook and a bubble gum colored worm. (its the first time we had ever tried them and the bass loved them) He taught them how to tie a proper knot as well. They had only there mom with them. I am not sure they ever caught a bass but at one point the biggest boy came running into camp saying I need another worm, a BIG bass just ate mine and took it hook and all.

Friday morning at 4:30 it was still raining so we just kept setting the alarm for 30 minutes later. At 6:00 we were ready and went down to the boat only to find it the storm and wind had push the boat sideways against the bank and broke the front rope. The boat was 1/2 full of water and we had bags of worms and other odds and ends scattered up and down the bank. We had raised the motor the night before but the wind was so strong that it had some how caused the motor to lift and then let it drop completely back down and pushed the boat hard enough into the bank that the motor was torn half off.

We bailed water until we got most of it and then I waded out in the water to try to get the motor back on and tightened down right. Ronnie was walking the bank picking up most of our gear. and dad went to get our other gas tank. We got it all back together and the engine started. Ronnie wanted to go ahead and fish but Dad and I decided to count out blessing and not push our luck and just took the boat to the ramp.

All week we had said tomorrow we have steaks on the grill but each night we would put it off until the next day. We were having to much fun to leave the water. So on Thursday night we decided to fish Friday morning and then have a steak lunch before heading home. Then after the boat fiasco we decided to have steak dinner at home that night and let my wife and Mom in on it. It was a great idea my daughters showed up with there own steaks and we had a family dinner with my mom and dad. It was just us my family. This was the first time we had did this in years.

I promised Ronnie we would go back to KY lake to fish as soon as he finished his report to you on his trip. He is almost done.

There was a man on this forum that I have never met that helped make this week great. When he read the story earlier this year about me flipping my boat and losing the money I had set a side for this week he sent us a gift to help cover cost for this trip. Remember this was from a man I have never met. He ask for nothing but us to have a good time. My son was as stunned as I was and we hope to be able to do the same for someone else one day.

Thanks Griz
