Sunday I was out on Old Hickory in my kayak, caught a few smallish bass, when I noticed a fish floating on the surface, naturally I paddled over to investigate.

It was a large crappie, looking bloated but fresh. It’s mouth was wide open and his gills extended. It looked fresh so I scooped it up. It had a 4.5 inch sunfish stuck sideways in it’s mouth. Both the sunfish and the crappie were still alive, but barely strong enough to wiggle their fins. I surmise that the sunfish blocked the water flowing over the crappie’s gills, so he suffocated. The sunfish’s mouth was stuck in the crappies face, so it also couldn’t get oxygen.

I’ve eaten road kill venison before, so now I can add Lake Kill Crappie to my list of accomplishments.

Hey Jakeway, if you were on the lake Sunday in a kayak I congratulate you for your survival skills. Holy Moly what a zoo OH was on Sunday. It looked like the lake scene on Caddyshack!! If any bass survived in shallow water with constant 2' breakers slamming the shores it will me a miracle.
By the way, that size crappie seemed to me to be the dominant size I was catching all spring. OH was really on fire from mid March until the high water hit.

Remember that time the snake was trying to eat that fish at Piney? That was awesome.

I must say that is the first time I have seen that though. Pretty cool and a good way to get a couple fillets. \:D

I put in at 7 am and was off the water at 10:30. Even at those times, there was a marked difference in the zooology coefficint between put in and take out times.

Pretty neat.

I saw about a 4lb smallmouth floating dead once on the TN river with a hand size shellcracker stuck in its mouth. It was turned the right way to swallow it but just wouldnt fit between its jaws.

i found a trout like that. wish i woulda taken a pic. it was a big trout that had ate another trout. the trout in the mouth was about half digested looked like it had been in there for awhile before it killed the larger fish.
