Are you talking about mayflies? Sounds like what your describing is craneflies in the yard. They are two totally different insect, but alot of people get them confused. Mayflies water, cranflies wet soil/water. Cranflies look like a mosquito on steroids, or a baseball player.

Either way what a life. Lay around and eat for 363 days, hatch out and have sex for 2 solid days, and then die. They don't even have mouth parts. If they only could reverse that for humans!
