The one and only piece of advice that I can give you is to give rsimms a call.
You can see his website (and lots of proof / pictures) at http://www.sceniccityfishing.com/
I made my latest trip (4 1/2 hours one way) just this past weekend. People that I know ask me WHY in the world I would go that far to catch catfish.
Well, first of all, it is more than just the catch, it is the entire experience.
On top of that however, I have fished for and caught catfish all my life, and I have never caught the quanity or the quality fish that I catch when I fish with Richard Simms.
You can see the pictures of my latest trip on the following two threads.

http://www.tndeer.com/tndeertalk/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1303325&page=1&fpart=1

I haven't had time to download my pictures but his are much better than mine anyway.
I cannot say enough about his professionalism, knowledge of the location of fish, LOTS of fish and BIG fish.
His teaching of different techniques for catching them is an art that he has mastered as well.

He will go above and beyond what is expected as a guide many times over.
He is entertaining to be around and when the fishing is slow, usually because I insist on chasing NOTHING but the big boys (which requires ALOT of patience sometimes), he is a pleasure to be around and usually has some great stories to pass the time.

This year stretch and I caught over 400 pounds of catfish in 10 hours. Really you can take 3 hours off that time because that is the time we spent without a bite. Don't take that the wrong way and think it HAD to be that way. Sure I would have loved to of got a couple more bites but we wanted to go where the big boys hang out. We did that and there were fish there, but they just didn't eat, no biggie.
We could have EASILY caught another 100 pounds or more on Saturday but that is just the way we wanted to fish, to target specifically big fish.

Now, when I say "big" I mean 50 pound+ fish.
We did catch one, well stretch caught one that weighed 50 pounds, but alas I didn't.
My quest for a fifty pound catfish is kinda like going to an outfitter for a deer and deciding to not shoot anything less than a 180" deer. That kind of hunting takes a different mindset.
Just like that big of a deer, that big of a catfish takes alot of luck.
Now with all that being said, I assure you, catching 18 to 25 pound catfish means you are catching big fish.
Couple that with using light spinning tackle with 8 pound test line and I ASSURE you that you will experience a fight (and fun) like you have never experienced while fishing, ever !
One or two of those fights will wear you out too. Try about 15 of them and I promise you, you will be tired when you get done.

Remember two things, just as with going somewhere to hunt, you are paying for more than just the kill, or catch.
There isn't a 180" deer behind every tree in Pike County Illinois and there isn't a 50 pound catfish waiting to be caught with every cast, but I promise you one thing..... they are there. ;\)

rsimms is truly the best fishing guide I have ever used. Just like Ruger said above, "He will go above and beyond what is expected as a guide many times over."
