This is probably a broad question that depends on the terrain and the bird, however, I will ask any ways. If you were going to set up and hunt a roosting spot of the evening, how long would you get there before dark to make sure that you beat him there? I know a spot where a gobbler has been roosting and may try to get on him one evening. I just don't want to go in too early and run him off.
I pray to fish until my dying day. When it comes to my last cast, I then most humbly pray, when in the Lord's safe landing net & I'm at peace that in His mercy I be judged big enough to keep.

That is a really good question.
I hunted a ridge yesterday evening, where they have been roosting. I got there about 2-hours before sundown. As soon as I got situated in my spot, hens started moving in. If I had been five minutes later, I would have been busted.
I hung around til dark and the hens disappeared into the trees.

The big boy never showed up for the party. He must have been out on the town with his buddies...
Thank god for kids.

on average when i do it i get there atleast 1.5 hours before roost but shoot for 2 hours if i have the time.

but yes terrain and normal pattern will play a role in that.

If I was gonna hunt a roosting spot I'd get there a couple hrs before fly up time, maybe do some calling on the way there so if he's already close by maybe he'll gobble and let you know, however there's always a chance he'll not gobble and bust you going in.

Get in there two hours before dark and be VERY alert.
