Interesting article. I'm all for commercial fishing within limits, but I don't believe the sportsfishing industry should subsidize them. TWRA should raise the commercial license fee $359 annually to cover their costs.

I wonder what the $1084 per commercial fisherman is that TWRA says it costs them. Is that how much it costs to stock the fish that commercial fishermen catch? If so, then there is a cost for all of us (commercial or sportsfishermen).

Anytime one group has to subsidize another group to keep them afloat then there is a problem.

I don't think there are any stocked fish that commercial fishermen harvest. I imagine the cost has to do with enforcement and ongoing management studies to make sure the resorces aren't over-exploited. Paddlefish in particular are management intensive because their population is fragile and there is big money in poaching them for their caviar.

Yeah, I wondered exactly what those costs were, too?

What about out-of-state commercial anglers?
Any stats on them?

If commercial fishing was regulated via another state department/agency would this be a blessing, curse or both?

I think if the resources can support commercial angling and it is well-monitored (that's the real cost, I bet) then I am certainly not against it.

In other news, and mainly my opinion, a market for those darned Asian fish would sure be a boon to commercial angling and "native" fisheries .

I have long thought commercial anglers were becoming a way of the past.
But for a small group, they can certainly make a lotta noise in the political arena, it seems.

And then you read stories about the various markets, from mussel divers, to paddlefish roe, to big trophy cats taken to pay lakes...and you wonder, how much money is really changing hands...what's really going on with these resources?

The average sport angler certainly does not know. But...does he want to pay to find out, or have some authority know...?
