at one time the turkeys on "Cow Island", just down river from Presidents Island, did not hardly ever gobble

I have hunted populations in areas around my home that did not gobble at all. There area good flocks in these areas every year, myself, my Dad, and quite a few others have hunted these areas ever since there has been turkeys and we have heard a total of 2 gobbles between us all these years and they were from jakes. We still hunt there some, just have to ambush them like you would deer.

I contemplated that very though over the last 4 days as I hunted silent woods. Came home early because quite simply we did not hear a gobble in 4 days. This is on ground which is usually ripping with 20-30 birds a morning everyday except when the weather is just awful. Perfect weather, and no birds.

Figured I would come home and earn some points and save a few vacation days.

Yes, I would quit the sport if they didn't gobble. I don't do this to ambush, snipe, bushwhack, or deer hunt.

I was in Miss, and the birds were there, tracks, strut marks, poop, and and dust pits do not lie. Nor do hundreds of sightings during deer season. The birds are there, they just were locked down.

If history repeats itself then the silence will soon spread northward this way.

Don't change the taste and I'd hunt them if they couldn't gobble, yelp, see, hear or walk.

I didn't realize so many folks turkey hunted for the meat aspects. Sure the meat is great, but it isn't the reason I turkey hunt. I love the chess game of moving and positioning on birds. Silent birds do nothing for me, but to each his own.

It wouldn't be near as much fun but I'd still hunt them. Just have to sit and blind call for longer periods of time until you were sure nothing was in distance of you and then move to another spot. It sure wouldn't be the same though without the big gobble to get your blood flowing.

i prob still would but not as much and definitely not as serious. I agree with the others that I just CANNOT deer hunt turkeys, to me that is not very fun. I would still go out and see if i could find them and ambush them though.

The topic didnt say you still couldnt call one in so that part would still keep me in the woods

A few years ago, I hunted hard for about three or four days in a row and didn't hear a gobble on the big farm I was hunting. On the fourth day I called in a group of four toms and killed the biggest one of the bunch. The all four came in silent not the first gobble. I still had a blast, but would have enjoyed it all the more if they would have been gobbling.

Oh it is here afraid to say. I hunt north GA a lot and it has been open over a week now. I have only heard gobbles last weekend on opening day. Gobbled their heads off on the roost. Haven't heard a word since. I know they are there but not talking. I have seen hens by themselves clucking and yelping, but no tom. Really weird start to the season. Saw to big boys today by together so they are in trouble in the morning. Cross my fingers!

I would. Walking and stalking is just as much fun and it's a lot harder to get close. I love to sit and call but there are a lot of days they are not going to respond. When that happens I get mobile.

No one said they couldn't kill them if they don't gobble. I just wouldn't waste my time sitting there all day dry calling when I could be catching crappie in less than a foot of water. I crappie fish, bass fish, and have a pretty decent golf game. There are way too many fun things to do in the best weather of the year to keep me from sitting in the woods dry calling. I love turkey hunting more than any other outdoor activity when they are gobbling. When they don't, catch me on the first tee or the lake.

There is silence, and then there is silence. If a bird gobbles one time, then it is a game worthy of playing.

However, if I go to the woods, and hear zilch. I will roam until I find one that will talk, and if that means driving somewhere else then fine, but I will not, repeat will not, sit down somewhere and blind call for hours in hopes something will ghost in. That isn't what the sport is about too me.

I would rather jam needles under my finger nails then blind call, squat on a field, or sit in a blind.
