At my tractor? I have a 4 cylinder 1952 Ford tractor and if I go up to my upper field early in the morning or come down near dark when I turn my tractor off the turkeys are gobbling like crazy up on the hill...After a minute they quit...this happens often...

I'm thinking of inventing a box call that sounds like my tractor...Cruff10, you could be right but usually it's early, coming off roost, or late, going to roost...I just came down from working on that upper field and no gobbling...

i personally think they gobble to get me all worked up and nervous and to make me do things i would not normally do , as in belly crawling threw knee high cotton mouth infested grass they have also been known to make me climb mountains and walk hundreds of miles threw mosquito and tick infested woods but what it means to other turkeys i couldnt tell ya

seems turkeys gobble at things like Crows, owls, boats, cars ect...due to high hormone levels come mating season. Most of the natural noises they gobble as a threat response (dont get along with owls and crows very well) were boats, horns and other unnatural things they tend to gobble for the same basic reason but with more of an added shock value.

during the spring they run very high in hormones and basically are willing to fight anything (which is another reason why Roosevelt wanted them to be the national bird because they seem fearless) any load noise is considered competition so they let it know right away they are there.

Ren, that sounds most reasonable. I was in town and ran into a buddy and we were talking at the car wash...I told him about the turkeys gobblin at my tractor and he said...yep, all the time, and you know what else? A dog will bark at a 6 cylinder truck and sometimes chase it when they wouldn't normally do that...I call that one bs, what about you?

animals do all sorts of crazy things during their matting season and turkeys are no different. They become "the king of the woods" so to speak in their minds.

I have seen them gobble at very odd things - lightning, truck doors, a whistle, tractors, boat motors, limbs breaking and falling, trains ect.....however if you notice 90% of the time it is in the spring only.

I guess the best way to put it is Ladies will do that to you

also another fun fact is HENs can gobble as well. It is not a TRUE gobble in the since of the same way a TOM does it but it can sound VERY similar to that of a TOM. Pretty weird stuff if you ever hear one.

Well, my tractor has been a great locator call and I know where they are at least. When the dad and his son came here for the juvy hunt Sat I was able to tell them where the turkeys were from them gobbling at my tractor...and sure enough, they were there!
