dcsoldier44 let me just say this turkey arent like deer. Turkey dont rely on scent. In fact you will get sweaty alot of the time.
Turkey rely on their one and most powerful characteristic. THEIR EYES!!! It was said by researchers that if a turkey could read that they could read a newspaper from 500 yards. So that means you will need to be in camo from head to toe. Turkey see all. They see every move you make if your not careful. So you need a face mask and gloves for sure. So onto where to hunt. Hunting turkeys is a very exciting thing, If you make it that way.

-Roosted is Roasted-
Many people try to locate turkey the night before and set up as close as possible where they say the turkey roost, to get them when they fly down. *** If you use this tactic make sure you are where you need to be way before daylight, and This may be a good tactic but you may and will eventually bump turkey of the roost.***

-Locating in Midday-
Another tactic people use is to use locator calls to get an ole long beard fire up or at least to locate where he is. This tactic will not work very well thru the early parts of turkey season. *** This may be a very challenging thing***

-Hunting Strut Zones-
This is a very good tactic. When it is time for the hens to go lay or tend the nest, the Toms will be in a panic state looking for hens. They may visit the same areas over and over again to acquire hens. These areas are Strut Zones. *** This is a good tactic to chase turkey but you may need to locate these zones by using locator calls.***

-Hunting Sign-
This is a Hit and Miss tactic. By that I mean there may be sign everywhere but those turkey may never come back to this spot. ***Not widely used unless hunters now the turkey use it daily.***

-The Stalk-
Some people use the tactic of stalk. Stalk can be described as many things in the turkey world. It could be sitting in a large field and waiting until a bird comes into it and sneeking to the bird throught the woods. It could mean just walking and calling and maybe hearing a bird or just walk up on one and it not see you. ***This is a good tactic if hunting fields.***

Well there are many more things i could tell you but i cant list all. But I will already tell you that Fort Campbell will be extremely hard to hunt... But I do wish you the Best of Luck.

you can drive down this fire break. its not like the others. game warden caught me but gave me a warning ticket. and spacifically said to take this road. its gravel and marked. and no wasnt trout fishing. theres a pond back there thats loaded with bass and perch. i found it before my last deployment.

hey dcsoldier, check out the "So you want to be a turkey hunter" thread. it was posted a couple years ago by one of our foremost turkey gurus, and has been reposted to help guys just like you. lots of good info. its still no substitute for the 1 on 1 experience you get from going afield with a turkey killing machine like renegade50, so be sure to pick his brain if you two venture out together this season. best of luck to you, your gonna get addicted.
