I say when you're tryin to learn that any two reed call will do the trick on learning the basics. When you get yourself skilled enough to move into 3 and 4 reed calls that's when things get pretty tricky. I like to keep 2 calls in my mouth at the same time and I have found the Primos calls to be very accomodating as well as plenty realistic sounding. Again, no two turkeys are goin to sound the same and half the excitement of making mouth calls is to try and become your "own" bird. I think you gotta try one of each of the manufacturers and find out whose is most suited to your style of callin. What is good for one may not be good for another. If I find myself with a few spare bucks I like to just randomly pick a mouthcall and see how it goes. I got a fridge full of random calls. If I had to pick one company I sure like Primos though I am diggin some of the Knight and Hale styles recently.

Welcome to your first time.
Don't try to make a yelp, just try to push a consistent flow of air across the call. After you get that, should be 5 mins, then begin cutting the air off to begin to make a yelp. Or go buy a DVD or CD rom on how to use one.
IMO it is impossible to describe in words.

The easiest way to describe. Put the call in the roof of your mouth. Using your tongue put pressure on the reed and blow. The amount of pressure depends on the call. You want to produce one high clear note. Keep practicing that until you can produce and hold that note. When you have mastered that , while you are making the high note, reduce the pressure on the reed and you will hear it break. Keep practicing that, When you have mastered that speed up the tempo and it becomes a yelp.
