Bluegills are my favorite fish to eat. I was wondering what a man would look for in a lake to locate keeper bluegill? I've had luck catching numbers under bridges on Tims ford but I would like to get some advice from others.

get off of the beaten path

I use a kayak and find quiet places in the vicinity of shady overhanging tree limbs that come within 4-5ft from the surface of the water. I surmise that bluegill catch a lot of bugs that light on these overhanging branches and fall in.

I try to get away from the cigarette butt and blue worm box trash infested shorelines where people and small bluegill interface.

good luck

slab blue gill....yum \:\)

I grew up fishing and eating bluegill. It's very good eating and a lot of fun to fish for and catch as well. It's a great way to get a kid started fishing.

My best advise would be fish the creeks in the area. On Tims Ford I've caught the best bluegill up in Dry creek up past the bridge. When it gets hot, fish up around Estill around the bluffs in back of the creeks.

Here is a good article I was just reading that covers the subject better than I can.
http://www.gameandfishmag.com/fishing/crappies-panfish-fishing/gf_aa066504a/

I like to find the slabs under docks and around areas where there is a decent drop off to deeper water when bank fishing.
Alittle trick to help bring them to you.Hang a can of dog food off a tree limb. When the maggots start dropping off into the water you'll catch Bluegill, cats, and bass.

I've found a few spots on Old HIckory that consistently hold larger bluegills than areas even a few yards away. The things they have in common:

1) The shoreline drops off abruptly to at least a foot or more right at water's edge; not a gradual slow slope
2) Water depth has ledges or relatively flat in 6 to 10 feet of water, within a fly rod cast of shore
3) Deep water nearby.
4) Some man-made structure, like dock or old boat ramp, is nearby, but not exactly where bigger bluegills are found.

I can't tell for certain what the bottom composition is, but I suspect that there's some kind of mud or silt that holds bugs.

I catch gills right up against the shore this time of year; as water temps increase, I just keep fishing deeper. Fly rod with bead head nymphs work best. For spin fishers, I like a slip bobber set for about 4 to 6 feet deep; I cast shallow, then slowly retrieve the line until the bobber stands up. Then I know the bait (I prefer parts of nightcrawlers, since they;re tougher than crickets) is just above the bottom.

Nice bluegill, Jake. Perfect eating size.

I never have trouble finding numbers of bluegill on Old Hickory, but I often have trouble finding the larger ones consistently. Maybe I need to start following you around. \:\)
